try using the search feature at the top of the screen...there has been lots of threads on this subject, besides, no one wants another oil thread. :p

Just completed oil change on my '87 300TD the other day and used Mobil 1 5W 30 for the winter. Drained oil was Mobil 1 15W 50 for the warmer months. No particular reason for my selection other than I happen to use Mobil 1 throughout my vehicles. The '84 300D Turbo will be seeing the remainder of the Mobil 1 products soon. Plan to use the same viscosity scheme. Choose your weapon and believe in it. PS (Search feature admonition gets all of us Newbies . . . I got my justified "slap, slap" a few times. Grin and take it because these folks are seriously great) Best

oil
Yes, there are special diesel oils or synthetics. No recomendation here, thinner oils for winter, heavier oils for summer. The recomendations are as varied as the products.

This really should be a 1-reply thread because the question is very simple. Here's the answer...
Use any C-rated oil with one of the following viscosities: 5W-40, 15W-40, 5W-50, 15W-50.

I really hope a few with the attitude don't wander over to the GM or Ford boards I'm on, no one there takes any of that. All I'm asking is a simple few questions here... searching brings up pages and pages of useless content due to people not posting on the thread topic that's been brought up... just smart replies like some that are listed here...
Okay got the thinner for winter, thicker for summer. I'll probably run some syn... I do in my Z71 and WRX. I've been with the Mobil 1 5/30 in those for the longest time. Great luck with their oils. I've heard diesel motor oil can go longer between changes, could you expect 5K mi on dino oil? Perhaps 10K on syn (with a filter change at 5K mi)? Thanks to all that contribute useful information!

They were not giving you attitude just saying that their has been 1k pages of oil threads and you can find the best info by searching. Now as far as what weight to use no 30w oil belongs in a diesel Benz ever! Yes use only diesel specific oil. The best oil for a cold, cold winter is probably Mobil 1 Delvac( sold at walmart as truck and suv oil, with a yellow cap) 5w-40.
But DieselAddict nailed it. If you want to extend drain times get a sample tested at 5k and go from their. I have no idea what kind of car you have but a 617 dumps a lot more soot into the oil then a 606 or a new CDI.

Also you can run Delvac 1 all year round it is never to hot for it, but if it makes you feel better use a 50w when it is hot out. I run Mobil 1 15w-50 in the summer.

The beauty of synthetic is that it doesn't get thick or thin due to temps in winter or summer. I use Delvac 1 5W 40 on my TDI Jetta and go 10K miles. I read here though that these old Benz's put a lot more soot in the oil than the newer diesels so you probably shouldn't exceed 5K even though it is synthetic. So that makes me wonder if it is worth the investment for synthetic on these Benz diesels?? I suppose if you lived in a cold climate in the winter you could justify it for start ups and warm ups...other than that though??
I'm parking mine for the winter, so I'm porbably going to switch to delvac 1300 dino from now on and change at 3K (for the benz, not the Jetta)

I was under the impression that none of the oils thinner then 5-40 were rated for use in our older diesels. I see no reason to run anything but the 15-50 Mobil 1 "red cap" even my 6 cylinder cranks fine when cold soaked, and oil pressure comes up quickly. (Then again I don't live in New England.....)
Just some random thoughts. I believe Dave M. remarked that Mobil 1 was good for 4% soot, even with each engine developing different levels of soot based on internal clearances, state of tune, driving styles city/hwy, etc, of all the oil analysis that people have shared on this forum, I have not seen any yet where soot has come close to approaching this 4%, and many of these where done at 10k miles. I would think the cheapest alternative would be to run to 5k miles the first time with Mobil 1, and use a topsider or mighty vac to pull a sample, if the analysis comes back good, no need to change it until 7500-10,000 depending on what the analysis shows. The arguement that I thought made the most sense, was to use synthetic in the 60x series motors, with their hydraulic lifters. For the 617 engines, use it if if you feel better about doing so, or if cold starts are an issue, otherwise save your money and stick with a quality dino oil, such as Delo 400, etc. |

Define cold Mack I saw 0 on my dash display, it didn't get out of the 20's for most of January last year. 15w-50 might be a little thick. However the 4% soot limit that D1 can hold is useless since MB says don't go above 2%.
Mobil 1 has almost stopped my lifters from ticking.
