FWIW, if I was selling the car, I would not hesitate to spend (or DIY) a few bucks to detail the car inside (specially the engine compartment) and out before posting pictures. Poor marketing!

If the engine bay was too clean, they could be hiding something, if its somewhat dirty, you may be able to see some likely problems that the vehicle may have had. The interior, however, that shouldn't be over looked and should be cleaned.

Well we all know that a clean and solid
looking floor doesn't mean a thing. The sounddeadning hides rust/rot easily and you would have a hard time finding it. In mine they looked good too. Untill I started to poke around with a screw driver and low and behold I had a hole you can drive a semi thru. Nothing beats your own eyes and a screw driver. Louis. |

I'm very tired of reading this line in every single car being advertised out there on ebay and such, "...This car is equipped with the 5 cylinder Turbo Diesel engine that’s known for going well beyond the 500,000 mile point". Otherwise, not that bad of looking car...

I noticed the pic was of the drivers side floor. Would it not rust first on passenger side rear, the lowest point in the cabin? Cheers, Bill |

I would be concerned with the paint job-my car is much shinier looking & and still needs repainting(crazing of surface). I may take some shots for this, but I think buying a car on ebay without being able to go look at and inspect it, take compression numbers, etc. is a big mistake-I've seen a lot of junk go for big $$$, and once you've got it, you are screwed big time.

Bought my 87 300Dt off eBay. I think the key is sticking to the ads that have enough information that one can refute that the car is not as advertised once you view it in person. If the car is not as advertised you can walk. This is how I picked up my 300Dt, and it worked well for me. Being centrally located in Texas and having access to low cost air travel sure gives me a bit of an advatange, as I can easily fly out a driving distance of say 1 to 2k miles to drive the car back to Texas. My car was sold by a broker, which I think helped to scare some competitive bids away, but the broker was very specific in the way and the words that he used to describe the car. I made a point to fly out to inspect/purchase the car within the time period allowed for the deposit to be paid, that way I did not have to give up the deposit sight unseen. Turned out the car was in better shape then advertised, and upon picking it up, I found out that it had $6k in maintenance reciepts from a reputable shop over the last two years as well. The broker picked me up from the airport, had previously checked that all the fluids were topped off, tire pressures good, etc. and he even called that evening to make sure I was getting back to Texas Ok. (Other then a tornado or two in Alabama, I was....)
Sorry to be so verbose. I say just look for the ads that have enough information to determine what the seller is actually saying the condition of the car is, and then if it is not as advertised, don't have an issue with walking away, but if the seller tells you nothing about the car, it is kind of hard to say it is not as advertised. |

Ebay
Regarding buying a car on Ebay - that's probably the best option for some people who are very specific in what exactly they want.
What other option is out there for us who live in the snow/salt/rust regions of the country...? It's a risk, sure. But I've looked at a lot of cars for sale in my area - and the selection is extremely limited. Generally, everything that I've looked at within 500 miles of my house is all rusty... So for me (and a lot of other folks I imagine), buying on Ebay and then catching a flight "south" is about the only way to do it. Catching a flight to "go look" at a car isn't a realistic option (for me, anyway). So for me to take the time and $$$ to get on an airplane and go look at a car - I have to be darn near 100% certain it's a car that I'm going to buy. "Winning" it on Ebay gets me closer to that degree of certainty. - Patrick PS - my family thinks I must be a little bit nuts for considering buying a car "over the internet", but what the heck? They already think I'm nuts for driving a car with a diesel engine anyway |
