My favorite "Snow car" was the Triumph Spitfire I had in high school, my best buddy and I, would grab a 6 pack, and some good tunes, and spin donuts around the parking lot. Ever few minutes we had to wipe off a window to make sure we were not getting to close to the edge of the lot, and thus the curb. It was a great car for chasing others around in the snow with as well, it seldom went straight, but you could controlably drift it to the spot you wanted to arrive at, sometimes you did so looking through a side window........

I have a hard time finding a large enough empty parking lot around here to do that in, and so many of them are filled with lamp-posts....hitting one wouldn't be very cool. I am definatley going searching for one once we get a good snow, I'll put my new goodyear assurance tires to the test, as well as have fun sliding around

It is a little less risky in a car that with a full tank of gas still weighs under 1650lbs. and 165x13R tires make pretty good skis as well.

I have slid my SDL once in a dirt lot and it is very controlable. I am looking forward to sliding it side ways when it snows. And of course doughnuts! W140 S600 an I have found a parking lot shapped lake a big bowl so that should be cool.

Ahhhh, donuts. One thing I love being able to do here in Indiana. I do plenty of them, usually on purpose. But, they are tons of fun. You can do them in FWD. I use the parking brake, works well for me. Or, put it in reverse, then floor it. That always whipped my dad's Buick around he use to have. My car is good with the donuts because I always seem to be able to make it do what I want it to, thus the control over the car. I love whipping my car around corners in editions, etc. when it's snowy.
Thanks
David

Let It Snow!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

My experience here in Southern Ontario is that it's worth spending the cash for real winter tires, and I've found Blizzaks to be the best.. I have Blizzaks on the Jetta TDI, Audi Quattro and MB 300D 2.5 Turbo for the snowy cold months. Makes a HUGE difference, even on the Audi which is AWD. I really don't have much of a problem in the MB if I also put some weight in the trunk. Bags of kitty litter work well, and then you can use it for your cats in the spring! As always though, you just have to drive carefully in slick conditions...

90 mph on a freeway onramp seems a bit fast for slick road conditions.. If your MB is now working so nicely, keep it. They are sooo nice to drive.

Studs or studless that is the quesion,

Here in central Oregon I have both studs and studless for the 2 cars. The studs are great when we get the thaw and freeze everyday as they can get you moving on the iced intersection with just a touch of the throttle.
The studless are great for road trips but the stopping power on ice is far less than the studs.
I usually put the studs on mommy's car for the extra protection and I drive the studless.
BTW - about three years ago they changed back to steel studs. they found that the alloy ones did just as much road damage but they wore out really fast.

Now for cookies you just head up to the huge parking lots at Mt Bachelor and turn her loose. I even took my motorhome up there one time just to see how well it di in snow. I love the SD with the extra tail weight but the best car I ever had on snow was a Volvo wagon of 1970 vintage. that thing was so well balanced that you could plow snow in second gear at an idle and have it coming over the hood and the thing still kept on going. The SUV craze is the stupidest thing ever out here as everyone drives one and they figure that since they can out accelerate you they can out stop you. It doesn't work that way though... as many of them find out in the snow bank or tree.
