Oil in injector hole
 

I pulled 5 injectors from a 82 W123 turbo diesel (in Picknpull Conmercial site).
Two are dry and the others have oil in the injector hole as well as in the lower part of the injectors. How can oil get to the injector? Can one deduce the condition of the engine from this?

Please note that the engine has'nt been messed with yet. When I disconnect the injector lines, fuel is present in all the injects.

I was reading about the Alpha Montreal(sic) seventies vintage I believe. Has a similar mechanical, engine oil lubed IP, 8 cylinder. Had just the opposite problem when the IP seals wore the gasoline would leak into engine oil precipitating very early oil changes.

I wouldn't think twice about it. Engines burn oil, it goes past the rings, down the valve guides and through the crankcase ventilation system. In addition diesel is light oil and there is probably residue that builds some from that. I just had my injectors out and couldn't tell you if there was oil in there or not.

The inlet port to the injector shows no sign of engine oil. This will refute the theory that the engine oil being pumped to the injector.

Well, that's one theory. If the pump was passing engine oil before it got to the breakers, wouldn't the much heavier engine oil settle to the bottom of the injector(where you found it to be) instead of climbing its way upwards?

If you have their is no oil up their that is diesel fuel most likely. If the injectos is covered in fuel the drip lines are probably leaking. The diesel will pool down around the base of the injector and look like an oil leak.

Now if you pulled the injectors and found the prechamber was wet it means you have a leaking injector. You should get all 5 checked at a diesel shop, the one I go to only charges $10 each to check them.

What colour is the oil?
If black, then it may well be engine oil.
If not black then it must be diesel which has had the lighter fractions evaporate, leaving an oily residue.

Well, finally found some relevent info from the Diesel performance tunig and repair manual by **************. "Do you see wet black oil at the end of the injector or in and around the sealing ring. If you do, that most likely means excess oil is somehow getting into the combustion chamber through the turbo, the valve guides, or the piston rings."

:) look for the simple fix first.oil leaking from the valve cover will easily work its way down the thread around the injector and pool around the heat shield.had the same problem.new gasket got it dry
