1983 300 SD Rough Idle Sometimes
Car starts and runs fine until engine is up to temp. Sometimes the car idles rough and other times idles great.
It appears when the car is idling rough, I can push down on the gas pedal to raise the RPM's and it smooths out. If the idle is set too low it would run rough all the time right? Any ideas besides a bigger hammer? |

I have the same problem with my 300DT-I am going to do a compression test and get my injectors cleaned and balanced-if you do a search, you'll see that those are 2 common causes(along with the much harder to fix stretched timing chain problem). Does your car fly down the interstate smooth as silk and then shake and smoke like it's possesed on the offramp? It must be mine's long lost big brother!

If by "rough idle" you mean the car shakes, that's most likely the old rack dampener bolt on the back of the injection pump. I've done that replacement plus the engine mounts and engine shock absorbers and it totally solved the problem.
Search on "rack dampener" here for more details. The classic symptom is a rough hot idle - especially after a long highway run. Ken300D

Yep, the car flys down the highway, hit the offramp and it starts rocking, shaking but doesn't smoke. Again, doesn't do this all the time. Anyway thanks for the advise. |
