Fuel Leak
 
I have a small fuel leak from what looks like the cloth wrapped hoses on the glow plugs. There isnt a power loss so I beleive these are the return lines back to the engine.

-I think the leak might be on more than one glow plug

-I just recently changed the fuel filter so could I have put too much pressure in the system somehow?

- Can I change the hose? and how...

- Or is there a seal?

This is on a 1983 Mercedes 300DT 5 cylinder

As you suspected, the cloth hoses are fuel return lines. They are actually attached to the injectors, not the glow plugs. They will leak after with age. You can try simply pushing them down snug on the injectors, as they should touch the tops of the injectors. If they still leak, replace all the hoses. They are should by the meter, and one meter should be enough to replace them all. Just pull off the old ones (easier when the engine is still warm) and push new hose onto the port. There is no other seal.

These are low pressure lines, you did not bring this on by changing the fuel filter, but make sure you don't have any leaks there, too.

Vacuum Hose
 
Please do NOT use vacuum hose to replace leaking over flow hoses. They are the wrong size and will not stand up to diesel fuel. :eek:

He he. That sounds like the voice of experience talking. ;)

To remove the old lines, pull them off with pliers. Avoid cutting them off because if you nick the barbs on the injectors, they will leak even with the new lines.

Yes, 5 years of experience on this board reading about other people's mistakes. Was fortunate enough to learn this one before I had to do it myself.
