Hello all,

I checked this forum out before i register and wow-- You folks have it covered.. I just bought my first MB, a "81 300d. it has about 215K mi (the odom broke about 2 years ago from what I can tell). I got it because MBs are legendary for their longevity it was priced right I paid $200 for it. it passed insp. in NH no problems and even with a few problems it drives great. it shifted very hard from 2nd to 3rd when I got it but after some doodleing I found a vac hose that was preferated. now it shifts good- I think. I hadent ever driven one of these before. otherwise I changed the air filter (I did extensive searches on this issue) and it quickly turned black with oil. I did the thumb on the valve cover vent trick and was able to count to 5 before it quit. it does not smoke or burn oil that I can detect, starts pretty well. I still after about 300 miles of owning it have not checked the valves. I saw a posting which seemed to be very similar to this prblem and the tech suggested that that person try setting the valves a touch loose for 1000 mi. so far without a leakdown test i am wondering if the problem is valves. if anyone could direct me to what I should be looking for more specifically that would be great.

You have confused me...
When you say you changed the air filter, do you mean the engine air intake filter???
Is this the filter that is soaked with oil??

You where talking about the vacuum system, did you mean the clear plastic filter in the vacuum line is soaked with oil???

Please clear up the confusion.

Whoops- Sorry, didnt want to be confusing. yes, it is the air filter that is soaked with oil. re: the vacuum leak I found- that was a plastic tube on a tee inbetween the vac pump and brake diaphram.

Ok, heres what your gunna do. Pull up the picture you want in paint, by opening paint and Clicking "File" then "open" Then find the file on your computer. After you have opened it click on one of the colors in the lower left hand corner. Then click on the solid rectangle, located on the toolbar on the left second from the bottom. Now left click in the upper left hand corner of what you want to point out, and while holing the left button on your mouse, drag your mouse to the lower right hand corner of what you want to show, then let go. Next save your picture, and pull it up in a new reply to this thread. If you have any questions, pm me.

I hope you don't think you have a blowby problem.... sounds pretty normal to me. Almost all of these Diesels have some blowby and as long as it starts and doesn't use just a ton of oil you should be fine. I wouldn't do the holding the breather closed trick again however.... not good for a lot of things to do that. Oil instantly turning black is normal too, lots of oil is left in the system when you drain it. Adjusting the valves is a good idea though, if you have basic mechanical abilities and a book (Haynes manual is good for this) you can do it yourself.

First, welcome. This site is not only informative but fun.

Secondly, I wish sady lived closer to me . I'm so computer dumb. Had mine wiped off/redone yesterday and now I don't think I'm getting emails as everyday I had emails from this forum before the clean up. How do you get those blue bars for folks to click to jump to another site?

Maybe I should find a computer site with a forum so they can all laugh at my stupid questions.

I think Bill is talking about links to other forums, questions, etc.

remarkable price. You can also find answers to almost everything that might come up archieved here and retrievable via the "search" function.

The Haynes Manual for the W123 diesels will be VERY useful as you get "into" your vehicle. You might also post here for others who live in New Hampshire or nearby who might offer assistance in person, or suggest a good shop to do some basic mechanical evaluation before you get in too deep.

Ah--links, yea,you're right. Don't know computer talk either.

Example: Someone mentions a car on ebay and posts a blue thingie you just click and it takes you to that site. Thats a link --right???

If you want to do a link in a reply, click the button directly under the "C" of color, when your in a new reply. This button is a picture of a little world with a chain link looking thing below it. Click it and put in what you want the link to say. ( ie. if i had a picture of my new car, I would type in something like "my new car", This is optional and can be left blank.) Next, Click ok, and enter the full website of what website I want people to see when they click the link. (ie. If i wanted to show the picture of my new car, I would have to type in the website it is found in. for example mine, which is "www.pgmfi.org/~firepyroandy") Then click ok.
