Looking at a 450SEL?

Hey guys,

I am a big diesel truck / car fan. Cruising the classifieds I found a 79 450SEL for $1,000 BO, needing a starter. I know NOTHING about these cars but it seems like they were a very expensive very fast cruiser for the day.

I don't know anything on the condition (yet). Anyone want to fill me in on what to look for? I know that parts for any MB would be expensive so if it's a complete dog I'd pass it up.

Thanks!

Actually MB parts don't cost any more then Japanese car parts. American cars have everyone beat though.

With the W116 the key is rust, I don't know where you live but unless your in CA or in a very dry area outwest chances are their will be rust. The W116's also like to rust from the inside out so thats fun to find.

Head over to the vintage forum they know more about those engines.

The 450SEL is a gasoline vehicle. Don't know about the engine longevity in those but all MB is probably pretty good

Also be careful with ads stating "needing starter", etc. as it may need a lot more (like a motor).
