W123 Shifting Linkage Bushing???

On the '84 300D Turbo the shifting linkage is shaking . . . checked underside and found that when PO replaced the transmission no bushing was installed where the rear of the linkage arm connects with the shifting linkage. It appears that a hard nylon "hat" type bushing would have been used.

Anyone know what the bushing should look like? Also, just to make certain of how it has been put back together, should the adjustable end of this linkage connection be pointing toward the left or right side of the vehicle?

Improvised for the time being. Made a bushing that will do until I get something better. Looking at the way the linkage is connected, I am still uncertain which direction the end of adjustable arm's pin (clip & bushing go on) should point. As is, it points to the right of the car which should the clip come off would probably stop the two from disconnecting. However, it does allow the linkage to chafe ever so slightly on the underside.

On my 84 300D I popped the clips off, removed the linkage rod, installed a new bushing on the transmission shift arm. The difficult part was getting at the shift lever end. I ended up taking the console apart, removing the whole shift lever and replacing the bushing on the workbench. This fixed that annoying buzzing on the highway. Incidentally, my shifter was filled with popcorn kernels, when it was on the workbench they all came pouring out. Previous owner must have had a kid.... The bushings are available from suppliers. RT

Thanks. On this one, it is the lower end of the shifting linkage and I can quite comfortably access it. I was able to get an improvised bushing on it but since my primary purpose was to check the flex disks and carrier bearing it was pure opportunity that I decided to find the source of the rattle. I can completely remove the connection to put the actual bushing on so now I will take your advice on the parts supplier.

Back to my initial quest to determine the cause of speed related vibration, the flex disks appear to have been recently replaced. The u-joint and carrier bearing still appear to be suspect. After viewing the situation and finding that the transmission has been replaced (new or remanufactured) I wonder if the installation was done correctly. The rear trans mount is new and if alignment was an issue then I suspect it could be one of several possibilities. More checking ahead.
