Ever had this happen with your ignition switch?
 

Well here is the latest update. I have narrowed my problem to 2 things. 1) is a bad vac switch on drivers door. Its leaks when the shaft moves from one instance to the other. Part on order. The next thing is I connected my vacuum guage in series to my shut off valve to see how much vacuum was being applied when the key is operated. As expected there is no vacuum signal while the engine is running. When the key is turned off, there is about 15 inches of vacuum applied to the cut off solonoid. This is more than enough to shut the car off immediately. But what happens next perplexes me. When the key is turned back to the start position the vacuum is between 8-5 inches. This should not be. With only 7-8 inches of vac it will hold the cut off solonoid closed so the car will not start. If I cycle the key several times off - on it drops the vacuum to almost 0 and the car starts right up. My guess is the ignition switch is not working right.

Any other suggestions??

yeah, it sounds like something in the valve on the switch is sticking (like carb flood problems) the seat of the seal might have something that is sticky like soot stuck to it or something..I'm sure that if it can be dissasembled and cleaned without destroying anything then you won't have to buy a new switch...

check the little vac device on side of ing switch

I'm going to attempt to replace that vacuum switch again today. My first attempt failed when I was unable to remove the top screw through the bottom of the dash. I'll pop out the gauge cluster today. I was able to easily remove the top screw from my parts car through the gaping hole where the cluster mounts.

Sounds like he had a sticky vacuum switch.

The ignition vacuum switch was not functioning correctly and the vacuum lines were reversed! P.O. replaced the ignition. :rolleyes:

Interesting, Thanks, I've been wondering about that. So you also had 4 inches of vacuum with the key on?
