1994 350sd...

My brother's friend purchased a '350SD new in 1994. The car currently has 175,000 miles on it and looks great. At 140,000 miles it developed a serious oil consumption problem. MB gave him the terrible news that it has a bent rod.

This gentleman has left the car parked for many, many months and asked me if I would like to purchase the car. I DO NOT HAVE ANY INTEREST IN THE CAR FOR MYSELF but I thought that I would throw it out to you guys and see if any of you would be interested. He has an asking price (way too high) but said that he would take no less than $5,000 for it. Please don't laugh me down. I am only delivering information. I AM IN NO WAY TIED TO THE SALE OF THIS CAR!!! I WILL MAKE NO MONEY FROM THE SALE OF THIS CAR IF BY SOME LONG-SHOT IT SELLS. Please don't shoot the messenger!

Kevin

$5k isn't to bad, figure $10k give or take for a new long block.

If the car was in really nice condition 5K is not a totally absurd price - A serious DIY'er could have it back in running condition for less that 10K total.

Turbodiesel had a thread a couple of months ago where somebody spent 3.5K on a 300D 2.5 turbo with some serious engine issues.

Well guys...

I wish I had some pictures of the car but I don't. I will get the man's number for any of you that are interested. Too much money for me.

Does the engine run enough to test the AC system?

Yes!

The car is driveable! He got so sick of the car using oil so he just stopped driving it. He offered to let me run it up and down the interstate but I didn't have time and was not interested in the car. He says the only thing hindering this car is the excessive oil consumption. I think he said 1.5 quarts every 150 miles OUCH!

That's funny. I think it was LarryBible who posted here that you could run a diesel engine until you can't carry enough oil to get where you're going. Apparently this guy heard the same thing and took it to heart.

KBB says its worth $11.2K in excellent condition. So assuming everything else works perfectly and it "just" needs a new engine, it's worth twelve hundred bucks. Any other problems and the value rapidly drops to zero - or less.

If he itemizes his income taxes he'll probably get the most bang for the buck by donating it to a charitable organization and claiming a tax deduction. Also avoids the hassle and effort of having to sell it.

Is it possible that M-B might still be willing to replace the block?

Since there seems to have been some sort of warranty program on the 350 diesel motor, it's worth asking.
