1998 E300 TurboDiesel Charging System Failure
Got in the 1998 E300 TurboDiesel this morning and a big red "Charging Battery" failure symbol lit up, which was accompanied by a kind of clunking noise. Lifted the hood and checked around. I had just changed the passenger side low beam head lamp, and the next time I started the car this beeping and red battery symbol took over the instrument panel. The clunking noise comes from the belt tensioner. Periodically the engine will jump and the tensioner will snap through its travel, then the car will idle. There is a regular hissing noise coming from the water pump or alternator area.
Wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and can give a hint where the failed component might be. Thanks, Jim

The failed charging system seems to have healed itself, and now the peculiar noises and clunking as well as the red battery charging system failure light are gone. Figuring the kid's phone charging gizmo must have drained the battery and caused the system to get low on voltage. If it comes back I will post again. Jim
