A new clutch - pressure plate, clutch disk and throw-out bearing - were just installed in this vehicle by a local Mercedes shop. What do you guys think? The rust on the door doesnt look so good.

Its a 3 hour drive down, 3 hours back. Then if I decide to buy it its another 3 there and 3 back. Atleast if I buy it, the drive home will be great.

Thanks
So you're gonna go look at thie one huh...

I know who this seller is and he is ---can't say it here.
I bought my first Benz from him and he totally misrepresented it. I even drove the 2 1/2 hours from here to look at it myself. Trouble was I didn't know what I was looking at. And sounds like you don't either so you would be a perfect candidate for him.

when he says "Not to my knowledge" he's lying.

When he says " Make me an offer" DO NOT OFFER ANYTHING>go through Ebay so you can leave negative feedback. He will try hard to sell it to you on the spot but don't let him do it. Wait until you have the car for a while before leaving feedback--as time goes on you'll find more and more stuff that wasn't disclosed.

I know he has people putting in false bids to escalate the price. "Shill" bids. Thats why he has good feedback.

The 300 he has for sale is truly [or was] his daily driver. You best believe he quit running her for some other reason than he bought something else to drive.

You do what you want. If you do buy a car from him I can add you to the growing list of dis-satisfied customers. Just remember "i told ya so".

One other thing-the 240 has a new clutch installed by the local mb shop. That same shop uses regular 10w/40 in the crankcase-an oil w/o the proper diesel rating. How good can they be if they do not even know what oil to use?

Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

Cheers,

Bill

Thank You.

Im not interested in that car anymore. Theres rust in all the wrong places, and its too far away. He's asking a little too much too. Then after hearing about your experience, im going to forget about the car.

I did a car fax on the 300SD, and I can tell that somethings not right.

Im going to look at the 300D tomorrow.

Carfax is useless, they only know about stuff that is reported. Nothing was reported on my car but it was deffinitly hit back in the early 90's from the rear.

I would only trust carfax on late 90's or newer cars even then it is best used as a guide.

Mileage should go up evenly over time, maintaince records will tell you this. Big drops or spikes are cause for concern. Now accidents are a different story, these are old cars and as long as the title is clean and you can't tell it was hit I wouldn't worry about it. Every one I looked at was hit at some point in it's life. Also don't buy a car with a chain of owners I would pay more to be able to buy from an original owner.

You will probably have to wade threw a lot of junk before finding one, but look at every one you can! You will start to see a pattern's and can make a better choice that way. Don't be in a rush to buy!

In addtion to what Hattie said about carfax I would also like to add that carfax was not even in existance before, I think, '94 so anything that happened before that date will not show up.

Also, if an accident is paid out of pocket it will not show.

These are great cars. Take your time to find a good one. Anything thats worth having will always be hard to come by but you'll find one. I know how anxious you young guys are but don't let it get the best of you. Wait for that right one You'll have it for years to come. Had my first car for 17 years!

Cheers,

Bill

Crap, forgot to mention...

You can hire a service, for about $200, to go look at a car for you when buying one thats a distance away. Then, when you get it, you can go pick it up yourself. Saves you two trips and you can buy with confidence knowing that someone who knows what to look for has checked it out.

I have not used this method of inspection but I know other forum members have.

Glad you're not buying a car from the junk dealer. There are more like him out there so be careful and educate yourself before you buy. you're in the right place for that.

Cheers,

Bill

All the cars I have looked at were garbage. Some were nice, but were in accidents. Some were abused, and some may have been stolen or a scam.

One car was being sold in NJ, even though the owner of the car is from Maryland.

Another guy didnt have keys for the car, and it was blocked in by 2 other cars. He insisted we went home and bid on it anyway.

About the SD, and carfax. There were milage spikes, it changed hands quite a few times, and was in and out of state a number of times. Didnt pass inspection, then they tried again, and it passed. Doesnt sound like anything I want.

This 300D looks good. Low miles, and minor rust.

Is climate control really that unreliable?

Do you even have your liscense yet? If you don't take your time, trust me I went threw this a few years ago! I had my Camry sitting in the garage all summer and no liscense! Talk about temptation and tourture!

My climate control works fine and I enjoy it, it is a good system when it is working. Other then a minor vacuum leak it has been one of the few trouble free parts of this car. Besides the po wouldn't have fixed it if it broke so it must have been working fine since 1994 at least!

The 116 is a classy 126, just think of it that way...I was just doing 100 in it yesterday, my mom didn't even wake up in the passenger seat! It actually pulls, no, hauls up to 100. It's scary actually. When I'm doing 75, it just doesn't feel right, (faster, faster, faster).
Thanks
David

I dont have my "license" I have my "Permit", meaning I can drive with a parent, or someone who's 21, and been driving for 3 years. Im trying to find a car now, becasue I want a daily driver by the time I get my license. In my price range, that means body work, and alot of the little problems that people dont fix before they sell the car. Since they arent selling a big buck car, people just sell the car with things broken.

Someone here said they drove a 6.9 at the max speed of 145, he said it was "like driving while sitting on a sofa". Or something to that effect. I'l love to have a 6.9, but the waterpump alone ir around $1,000!!!!
Thanks

I bought my car for $1100 form the original lady owner. Her husband was a doctor. I still have the original metal tags that have his name, "dr. ......". I just thought it was cool they use the correct prefixes on the tags. Now, I've done TONS of work to it, and it still neds some, manily oil leaks fixed and rust, but i'm also VERY picky, like Hatterasguy is with his car.
Thanks
David
