Actually Brian the two most expensive things on these cars is body work and major engine work. With trans and interior work coming in a close second. It is very easy to drop $5k-$6k at a good body shop to get a repaint and some dents taken care of, throw in rust and the price shoots up! Their is no such thing as cheap body work it is just not worth it for a daily driver.

These cars have to be a hoddy first you really have to be willing to put up with a lot and spend a lot of time working on them.

Well, trans are a more common problem than engines it seems. But I did find this page (http://www.adsitco.com/catalog/default.asp?CID=25) while looking around their site.

$1195 for a rebuilt trans with a 1 yr./unlimited mile warranty. However, it doesn't include the torque convertor. With a convertor, the warranty goes up to 2yrs.

Man Hattie, what body shop do you patronize?

$5-$6k sounds a little high. In this part of the country you can get an excellent paint job for $2k. Sure, substantial rust will increase the price.

Now if you get a custom paint job with lots of detail work sure it'll cost $5k. But for a factory color for these cars $2k oughta cover it. I'm getting mine repainted with the factory color, excluding the door jambs as they look new, for $2. Top quality material included-no Maco paint!

Cheers,

Bill

Twin Lights in Milford, they restore classic cars and do a lot of body work on newer cars also. They do very high quality work that would look right on a Mercedes. Just a respray is probably around $2k-$3k but if you have dents and want them gone figure at least another $1k, now as far as rust the price shoots up quickly. Now with the respray I am assuming the owner removes all of the trim.

I havn't gotton a price yet but to cherry out the body of my car would probably run about $5k.

My car is getting stripped to bare metal, 1 door ding taken out, trim removed and it'll cost $2k here. Also getting it done at a friends shop that does specialize in classic/streetrod restorations.

Haven't asked what he charges a guy off the street-maybe I'm getting a break because we're long time buds

BTW-I've got one little rust bubble smaller than a dime that is getting fixed. Rare for a car that has been in the rust belt all its life.

My buddy did mention these cars are a PIA to paint correctly.

Cheers,

Bill

Maybe in next year I'll get a price, the only problem is my fron left fender will need to be replaced because their is a nice rust hole under the headlight. I have 3 major dents all on the right side.

Or did we talk you into staying aboard?

Cheers,

Bill

The correct quote is; "There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Rolls-Royce or Bentley."
A $2000 or $5000 Rolls-Royce or Bentley will typically cost $28,000 + to make it safe to drive, and restoration to show/award condition will peak around $180,000.00....
Am I knit picking, yes, because a friend just bought a cheap Rolls-Royce.

I can just imagine what front end parts would cost for that machine. Ball joints maybe $250. each, tie rods, maybe $350 each. The parts alone would kill you.

A friend of mine has a Rolls-A 1947 ,all original [yeah, even the paint] and i was floored to find it equipped with factory A/C.

Just had to throw that in-the A/C in such an early car amazed me.

BTW-the vintage radiator cap on that car is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $5k

Cheers,

Bill

What is the radiator cap gold? I guess if the driver/owner ever has to open it he would not have to deal with the tin caps of mortal cars that the great unwashed drive.

That would be the Flying Lady or the Flying B.
A 1970's Rolls-Royce Flying Lady or Bentley Flying B costs roughly $500.00...
The chauffer is supposed to know how to check the fluids, not the owner.
