oil press after oil change

Are there any techniques out there to decrease the amount of time it takes for full oil pressure to build up the first time the car is started after an oil change? I used to fill the spin-on filter up with oil when I changed it in my previous car.

I had a trick that my independent mechanic in Denver showed me and that I used to use on my 420SEL. Dunno if it'll work for you on a diesel, but --

I used to disconnect the coil-to-distributor wire at one end and put it aside. Then I cranked the engine, watching the oil pressure gauge. When the needle came up over, say, 1 - 1.2, I'd switch off, hop out, connect the wire, then hop back in and start it up.

Come on Kevin. Everybody knows what a distributor is. You go down to those places that sell parts such as oil filters, brake parts, hoses, belts, etc. and you ask them for something and try to get a bit of advice on doing a specific task. The response is always the same, "What's the part number?".

That is a distributor.

Crack the injector lines and crank until the pressure comes up.

Easier and less messy, pull the vacuum line to the shutoff device and put some suction on it with your MityVac. Or have a helper hold down the stop lever while you crank. Or look up whunter's post showing plans for a pre-oiler.

Yea, and if you dont have great compression, you could just start it without glowing the plugs.

When I'm adding the oil, I add 2-3 quarts through the oil filter housing with the new oil filter in place. Takes a minutes or so but I THINK I notice a difference in how quickly pressure comes up.

By starting-up the car as usual after an oil change. NO HARM is going to occur to your engine. There is still a fair amount of the previous oil left on the cylinder walls, and all other critical components. This oil will still provide adequate lubrication during the first few seconds of what you THINK is a dry start-up.

The previous post, by Fred, suggesting adding some of the oil through the oil filter housing is good, and if its going to make you feel any better, than go ahead and do it, but that's probably as far as you should go.

I would not crack any injector lines open. That's ASKING for trouble. It won't be long before your injector lines start leaking, even if you tighten them back correctly with a Torque wrench. Its just not worth it, it really isn't.
