'77 240D altenator/charging problem
Charge indicator lite flickers at low rpm, gets brighter w/higher rpm. Belt was loose & would not stay tightened. Replaced with proper belt at correct tension - same symptom. Could this be regulator/diode problem?
Also, pulley is a bit out of line(forward of) the back(close to block) crank pulley. the '83 parts car is missing it's altenator and there is not another one lying around in either car. Anyone know if '83 & '77 were a bit different? thanks,

Bump - No one answered my query but I'm not as dumb
as I thought I was. Do y'all know how many pages there are on the subject, after I came up with the word "brushes" in the search function - I'm only on page four and I already know why no one replied!!!
I think I can fix it now. Thanks everyone. I'm learning....

Bump again - Removed reg/brush assy to inspect(twice!)
Didn't have any idea it would bolt back in upside down.... Trbl turns out to be loose connectors at the alternator(discovered engine would load and unload when wiggling said connector) & will fix that today.

don't just love it when you answer your own questions at times.......
been there before , was stumped and the minute I asked her a light come on in my head and I fix it before I even get an answer. Sometimes things just work themselve out for the better.

Thanks, Rick. Mine is not out of line
enough to throw the belt off - may line it up one day. I've come up with another question. The connector to the alternator has three wires. the small one is for the charge lite. The other two go to the same point on the starter solenoid. Did they just use two smaller wires rather than one large one?
The '77 wires are just 2.5mm stranded but the '83's are fuse link wire. I've discovered that the cap on the connector comes off so one can clean and retention the lugs. If I mess up, I have the '83 one I can use. Someone has butt connected the '83 fuseable wires to the remaining harness - so the connector must be a part that can be ordered??

Can't find it anywhere in the EPC. But you might call Phil at Fastlane and ask him.
