EGR and block heater - 603 300sdl

Hatterusguy mentioned replacing my block heater cord when I take the intake manifold off. Where the heck is the block heater? I know it came standard on my car but I can't see it and I can't find any existing cord near the radiator. I suppose it's possible that my car doesn't have one.

HG also mentioned disconnecting my egr valve. I'll search the site for that one. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Sorry for the questions. I've been trying to locate a paper factory repair manual but have not been successful. I missed one on ebay a few weeks ago. I'm not a big fan of the cd ones. I have one for my porsche and I'm not really happy with it.

Thanks
Dave

Are the EGR's vacume or electric on the 60x's

sixto 10-24-2004 09:12 PM

The plug for the heater is above the starter. Follow the turbo oil feed line back to the block, then look about 4" further back.

To disable the EGR valve, plug the vacuum hose leading to the EGR valve, or better still, install a cover plate between the EGR valve and the mixing pipe.

rg, the EGR valve on a 603.96 is vacuum actuated but the switchover valve is controlled by the EDS.

Thanks guys. I just found some good stuff on the egr valve. I suppose I'll try running with the vacuum disconnected. If that seems good, I'll disconnect the sucker.

What is the egr valve for?

EGR = exhaust gas recirculation. It's an emission control device that introduces exhaust gas (low oxygen content) to the combustion chamber to lower combustion temperature. Also has the effect of turning oil from crankcase ventilation and leaky turbo seals into soot in the intake manifold, intake runners and valve stems.

You have to go under the car to find the block heater plug, it is right under the rear of the exhuast manifold. Kind of a pita to get to, I just changed mine Friday and I decided to run it between the heat sheild and air cleaner. The original cord was sitting on the exhuast and I didn't think that was the best set up.

Btw the dealer had the right cord for $32, the $12 fastlane cord doesn't work. Also the dealer cord is real high quality and seems to be well worth the extra $20.

I just did this on the SDL. It is very likely that you have the block heater and do not have the cord attached. You cannot see the block heater from the top of the engine. Get the vehicle supported properly on jack stands and crawl under the passenger side, behind the RF wheel. Move forward toward the front of the vehicle and look up along the right side of the engine. There will be a round plastic cap, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter, that covers the pins to the block heater. It does not want to come off by hand so you might want to carefully put some channel locks on it and help it off. Underneath the cover are the pins for the block heater cord.

As Sixto had explained, you can simply disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the valve. That will stop all EGR. Alternately, you can purchase one of my two remaining kits that will eliminate the look of the ugly valve completely in favor of a machined stainless steel plate. Be careful of your local emission inspections however.

So you're the guy with those nice little caps. Neat. Does the link I posted point to your site?

What a great site. You guys really know your stuff. BTW - HG, I read that you're thinking about turning to the dark side. You're too helpful to even think about getting rid of your sdl. Think of how much you've learned repairing your car that you can now share selflessly with diesel know-nothings like me. It's much appreciated. I'm a lot older than you and I did try to drive an average everyday car - doesn't work for me.

Many thanks
Dave
