Question Diff drain/fill bolts

Does anyone know what size allens are for the differential fill and drain bolts? On older American cars you could use a 3/8" extension. I have a 3/8 , 1/2 , and 1" drive set.

They're 14mm. You can get those big allens at NAPA for cheap...$8something when I bought mine.

Make sure you get the fill plug loose FIRST!

Mine were in there quite tight, if it wasnt for the wheel chocks I would have definetely pushed it off the jack stands getting those buggers lose. Tap on the wrench with a hammer to break 'em lose.

Took a 3 foot breaker bar on my SEL and I thought I was gonna turn the car over when I tried to break mine loose. I was easily putting 400 pounds of torque to the blasted plug. When wife's SL was up on lift for an inspection, I had them break BOTH plugs loose just so it would be easier for me next time. I wonder if this is a job better done right after the car has been driven for awhile. Make the case warm up and expand so the plug is looser? Autozoo also has the set of three allen head sockets (12/14/17?) for about $8.

I have posted pictures of my high torque low impact method of getting these loose.... you put the jack into the hole and use it as an anchor for a comealong... which attaches to the wrench....
Very easy.....

Felt like the tightest part on the car..

I see I'm not the only smuck to have to change his diff oil lately, yesterday for me. I love my electric impact wrench.

Knocked over the small oil drain bucked as I finished up.

Thumbs up Fun ?!?!?!?!????

Okay, this sounds like it will be fun!! The other day I removed all 4 wheels to check brake pad wear. I had a 4 spoke lug wrench and had to put a floor jack under the wrench to break them loose. Each lug nut. I love over torqued bolts!!!

It's extremely important to loosen the fill plug before you attempt to remove the drain plug. Last year I changed the center differential fluid on my old Audi, and I made the mistake of draining all of the gear oil before I attempted the fill plug. I used a 2' breaker bar, and my 2-and-a-half-ton hydraulic floor jack for one of my efforts. I bent the breaker bar into a banana shape, and actually lifted the front of the car off the jack-stands! I had to get medieval on that plug, and used enough heat to turn it orange before it finally came loose! I was worried that any residual gear oil would catch fire! At one point, I considered standing the car on it's nose to refill the differential, it would have been easier.

Mandatory Mercedes Content:

Is GL-5 gear oil acceptable on my '87 300 SDL, or is the much harder to find (in synthetic) GL-4 required?

Richard

I worry about using Impact equipment on things which may not have been out in 20 years...
Seems to me like a possible way to break the differential ... didn't someone post a picture of a broken third member due to this ?
My comealong puts the pressure on slowly... It is also easier on old guys....

I not sure, but isn't the cover plate on the the thing stamped steel? If so it won't break, might bend, but won't break. .

I always had to use the impact on the Nissan tranny and it was cast aluminum.

Not on a 115, 116, 123 or 126. Cover is cast aluminum, housing is steel.

So that's why they are so hard to get out. Unlike metal's.
