More Newbie Questions!

Chetbaker again, more questions so please be gentle.

(brief recap 79 300SD (pretty new transmission) 220,000 miles)

What's the best oil to use? I've read lots of posts on here about synthetics as opposed to dino. what weight? 20/50? something else?

what the best transmission fluid? any specific brands or will i alway need to go to a jiffy lube or some other oil change monolith-type place? how often do i need to check this on my own (outside of 3000 mile check-ups and changes)

specific diesel fuel? is a specific company (for eg.,...76? shell?) the best or should i just go for price. i live in L.A. so i have somewhat of a choice. (note: someone mentioned Rotten Robbie but those are mostly on the freeways out of the city limits.)

biodiesels? how do i mix this myself? are we talking a funnel and a plastic jug in a garage?

just a few questions. will think of more tommorrow.

thanking some friendly folks in advance.

Well put. I read the questions and was thinking the same (oil war???).

Chet,
Whoa . . . There are so many threads on these subjects and almost as many opinions. Many of the opinions are based on specific facts yet the opinions still differ. Fuel??? From what I have learned, you'll likely need additives so you may want to do as I have just learned to do, ask the local distributors what they are selling. #1 or #2. Cetene rating. Sulpher content??? I have now resorted to asking the drivers when I see them making a drop. So far they have given me the quickest answers.

I just completed a couple of quick searches on three of your questions and found more reading than you'll want to do in one sitting . . .
