Quaker State Oil?

Hello,


I was wondering what oil does MB USA use.

Here in Toronto, Canada, the dealership uses Quaker State oils.
Tehy said to use the Quaker State HDX 15W40 for the 190E, C230 and current E300D that we have.

I do not know about the synthetics however.

I was just wondering as to why they are using QS? Is it just which company gave MB a better deal or what?

I bought an older 300D 2.5 Turbo recently and it had been serviced by MB with Quakerstate oil only for the past years here in Canada. Switched to synthetic as all my other cars have been running synthetic ever since I've had them too.. never looking back at that QS oil. I don't know why that's what they use at the dealerships here...

Hello,

Same case with our car, 95E300D, serviced with QS oil! I want to change to synthetic. Did you encounter any problems after the swtich, oil consumption or leaks?
Could you state what oil you are using and how ofen you change it.

I didn't encounter any problems, in fact I was using a bit of oil before hand and now I seem to be using even less. I do have a tiny leak at the rear main bearing seal (and it appears the front also), but that was there before hand and is a very very tiny leak that doesn't leak anywhere near enough to require topping up during intervals.

I switched to Mobil 1 15W50 Synthetic and am changing oil around every 8-10000km depending on my driving. 95% of it is highway driving, hardly any city driving.

Did the small oil leak start after you switched to synthetic?>


Right now I am not using any oil and I am fearing that i will start consuming, once I go synthetic. I will want to run 15W40 and 5W40 in Toronto winters.

We do about 70% city driving, but no extreme traffic, I would like to change my oil every 8-10k km,

No, the leak was there before I switched to synthetic. I am going to see how 15W50 plays out as the winter draws nearer... I live near Toronto. I switched to the 15W50 on the recommendations of this forum.

In my other cars I am still using Castrol Syntec 5W50 which I have been using for more than 10 years, but didn't want to use that in the MB. The 5W50 has been perfectly fine in the winter and summer for the other cars.

The Mobil 1 15W50 cold pour point is -49F, so I imagine it's going to be fine for my uses (my car is in a garage overnight anyway, and that's when it gets coldest...). The 15W50 as discussed here many times seems to be pretty popular for our MB diesels.

Mobil 1 doesn't have a 5W40 or 15W40, and the 30 weight oils are no good for our use. So the options with that oil is 0W40 or 15W50, and the 15W50 has more praises than the 0W40 from what I've read here.

Mobil1 Does have a 5w40 now (yellow cap). It's pretty new here, may not have reached Canada yet, Eh?

I can remember back to the days that Quaker State got it's bad reputation. I'm sure now days that it's as good an oil as any other, but would not use it myself because of those prior days. I would not put it in a customer's car unless they requested it. I know a bunch of mechanics that feel the same way. A bad reputation can stay with a company long after they have corrected their problem.

I read awhile back the QS was now marketing itself as high-end oil. I have been using PetroCanada Duron 5w-40 syn for awhile ($16US per gallon), but will soon switch to the more readily available Mobil Delvac 1 (repackaged as Mobil Truck & SUV oil, at ~$20 per gallon). Engine doesn't leak a drop.

Oil is oil....for any given weight

look at the API classification seal on the back of the bottle. This is the ONLY piece of information that truly matters.

Order of importance
1. Select the API rating you desire/require
2. Select the weight you desire/require
3. Select the type you desire/require, synthetic, blend, dino
4. Select the price you desire
5. Select the brand &/or store you desire

Oil is like gas...corporations, suppliers, refineries, wholesalers, distributors all buy and sell to each other as supply as production ebbs and flows. There is no guarantee the "brand" on the label is the true source.

Oil is made to specific API classification levels. Production facilities will not "over-refine" motor oil unless they can classify the product at the next higher API level. Why spend extra money & time if you can't label it as such to the consumer?

All brands with the same API rating & weight are identical.

Just like Budweiser & Busch beer. Exact same production line. Exact same product. They just change the labels and keep going. Why? Market share. Not everyone will pay Bud prices. So they make budget beer and expand market share.

Just look at all those fancy new oils on the shelf..."high mileage formula", "4X4 formula", "towing formula", blah blah blah. What happened before? Did all these special needs vehicles blow up and die before these oils were on the market?

A fool and their money......
