85 300SD on E-bay

For anyone interested, there's a 85 300SD with 162840 miles on e-bay. Paint is so-so and A/C is listed as poor, but claimed actual miles.

Not to hijack this thread but...

I noticed on the door panels all the scuff marks. I have found that those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work wonders on them with no real effort. I have cleaned so much in my car with those. Of course, you will want to wipe anything you clean with them down with a wet cloth afterward or treat any leather or vinyl with something.

Sorry 'bout that. "Now back to our regularly scheduled program."

Yes, the oil pressure gauge is certainly broken.

Is it just me, or are the rear wheel wells a little too "burgundy"? The area that can be seen just above the tire should be black but it looks like overspray to me.

We get them at our grocery store. Around here we have Bi-Lo, Wal-Mart Super Center, Winn-Dixie(local for us, I think) or you can try at stores like Eckerd's, CVS, Dollar General, Walgreens, etc.

They're pretty neat. Just wet with warm water and sqeeze them almost dry and they make a great cleaning tool.

Or could it be...

The oil pressure gauge works because the engine IS running. The tach, fuel gauge, and temp gauge are what's not working. :p

Oh but wait, the key appears to be in the off position. Maybe it's not working either and the car is hot wired.

Sorry, I just had to throw that in there.

Key off, engine running because vacuum shutoff is busted. Geez, haven't you guys been around these diesel's long enough?

That car has been repainted, and so have the wheels. Not original colors on either.

I too noticed what appeared to be overspray in the wheel wells.

The air filter is in a different place to mine, mine sits right atop the turbo and inlet manifold, and has a molded U bend pipe that feeds from the filter to the inlet.

Notice that the wood on the glovebox doesn't match the rest?

How can you tell Rick?

Seller stated:

You get 30mpg in city driving and 35mpg on the highway
Any '85 300SDs getting ANYTHING CLOSE to that? On that alone, I'd stay away from that car. Seems like he is just trying to move his inventory by saying things that are untrue.

That air filter location is what was used with the California emissions package. Hard to tell from that angle, but looks like the trap oxidizer was replaced with the straight pipe.

Braverichard, spend enough time with these cars and you learn what they should look like. The bundt pan wheel in the trunk is the correct color. Also the correct wheel for the car. The flat face wheels came out later, and they are too bright. I know, I repainted a set (badly) on my former 300E. They looked the same - for about 3 months.

The color on the body is also too bright, but the overspray in the wheel wells is a dead giveaway. Not only the wrong color, but a poor paint job because they couldn't be bothered to mask the wheel wells.

Nice detective work!! Yeah I know, the more time I spend with these pieces of German metal the better I get to know them.

note the tube coming out of the banjo bolt in the back of the engine compartment looks clogged.

I once got 32 mpg hwy, but usually about 28. 24 is best in city.

bunt cake spare & post 85' rims

very dark interior, probably soot from deisel fumes sucked through the trunk because of crusty rubber air flow through flaps. note also the darkness on the rear deck

what is the red wire coming from the climate control over the passenger side of the center console?

note in picture of open right rear door that the rear seat bottom is not installed properly

note rear picture - where is the exhaust pipe?

missing front tow hook cover

engine was just cleaned, note soapy water on top of air filter

the majority of buyers comprising feedback rating have a rating of less than ten themselves.

While I really admire your analysis, I think you were getting a bit too picky there and some of your assumptions may be a bit far fetched. For instance, the seemingly dark interior could just be an issue of lighting in the camera shots. But still, I admire your sharp eyes. It is because of such possibilities that I don't want to buy a car from eBay that's far from me. I want to be able to visit the car I am interested in purchasing as many times as possible in order to notice more and more things before I decide to spend my money.
