educate me on 86 and newer models
Way back when I first got my 300sd I didn't know my d's from my sd's from my td's. Now I am well versed in all the pre 1985 cars but know very little about the 86 and newer models.
What about the e300? is that one of the cars that was available in either gas or diesel throughout all of its model years? Ive figured out that the 190 comes in either e for gas or d for diesel. Ive heard that the 300sd was continued to be made after 85 but with an alluminum head engine but I never see any around. Straighten me out. I know its a greenie question for a 2 year member but you dont know the answer till you ask. Give me a run down of all the 86 and up diesel models in the US. |

There's one little piece of information missing from that site. 1994 is the year all the model designations changed and they moved the letter(s) from the end to the beginning.
They also stopped using a 'D' in the model designator for diesel at that time. Edit: also missing are the years for the E300 Turbodiesel - 98 and 99.

Case in point on the E class: They started using the "class" designators exclusively, so on the 210 chassis for example they are ALL E class cars, E320 for example, but while they were calling the gassers E320, E420, E430,E55AMG, the Diesels were STILL E class cars, they called them E300 Diesels. Did pretty much the same thing where the S class cars all started with an S, SL Class, C Class, even the ML is considered the ML Class. The E Class is probably the most confusing since we are used to "300E" being a gasser and a "300D" is a Diesel. After this period they simply decided to name the mid-level car the E Class irregardless of the engine type. Does that help?
Gilly PS probably the MOST confusing is that when they started this naming system, the 190 was still in production, so you occasionally hear even MB referring to it as the "190 Class". HUH???
