blower slowly goes off?

I bypassed my servo unit on my 1980 300SD a couple of weekends ago to get heat routed into my cabin, which worked fine.

Until this week, when my blower stopped working on the way into work. It was so gradual, that I didn't notice it. I tried to get it going again, checking fuses, connections, etc but everything seems normal.

Then this morning, after not driving it for a few days, when I flipped the switch for the blower, it came right on, but faded to nothing within about 10 seconds.

Is this a familiar symptom to anyone that can help me diagnose the problem?

Thanks,
Dunl

it might be a coincidence, but-

pehaps the brushes in the fan blower were wearing out about the same time you bypassed the servo. I had to replace the ones in my '84 at about 270K.

First, check the fuse. Pull it out and verify the metal strip is intact- sometimes they look good but are actually cracked in the middle.

If the fuse checks out, drop the right side underdash cover, pull the blower and check for free rotation. If the bearings are good, you might just need brushes.

Search the forum, lots of info about blower brush replacement on this site.
