Question My heater stinks!

Yuk!

I think my car is killing me. I flipped on the heater to a really nasty smell, something akin to my gym locker in high school, only x100 worse.

I'm sure it has something to do with a nasty fungus, mold and other friendlys growing somewhere in the dash, any easy tricks to solve this problem?

I'm was planning this spring to replace the evaporator since it started to leak badly this summer. So I haven't really used the ACC all summer. I may need to move the project up if it I'm going to have to deal with this smell everytime I use the heater.

It's bad, I think it gave me a headache.

In your climate and without use it would not be a surprise at all if the ducts were full of mold. This could seriously affect your health so take caution. I don't know if it is easily accessible or not, but if you can get to the inlet for the air, you could try misting a disinfectant into the duct system to see if that helps. Otherwise, you may just try turning the heater on full hot and let is sit and run with the windows down for several minutes (preferrably without you in the car) to see if that cleans them out.

Make sure your drains are clear.................................and condensate is not pooling up for a microbiological nirvana.
