What was your first car and...
...how much did you pay for it and how long did you own it?
Mine was a '67 Chevrolet, I paid $700 with 20,000 miles on it, and I had it for 18 years. Cheers, Bill |

I was in the USAF, stationed in Italy, when I bought my first car. A brand new 1967 Fiat 500. I believe that it was just over $600, and that was with the optional radio and white wall tires. I kept it about 2 years, and drove it all over Italy. I sold it to buy a used 1965 Austin Healey 3000, Mark III.

my first car, a whole 2 years ago(!) was a '95 Peugeot 405 turbo-diesel wagon. Paid £1800 (about $3100) with 165k on it.
Went all over England, Scotland and Wales in it and it never missed a beat. Only sold it when I moved here, put almost 25k on it in less than a year Best car I've had yet and will quite possibly get another one when I go back to the UK next month.

My first car was a '74 VW Bug. It was promised to me when I was 7 years old, and my dad put it in storage for me at that time. We got it out on my 16th birthday, it sat in his driveway for a year (I live 300 miles away, and the two of us would try to get it running when I went down to visit), and finally got it drivable in late April 1998, about 2 months after my 17th birthday (and also 2 months since I had actually gotten my license). I then drove it the 300 miles home.
I drove it for 2 troublesome months after that (ignition system gave me fits!! - one of the reasons I switched to diesel), until I thought I finally had it running well. I then tried to drive down to my dad's on July 1st, 1998...got over Pacheco Pass, and blew the engine about 10 miles down the I-5 shortly thereafter. Didn't tear the engine apart (no $$), but I figure that the #3 piston blew...it wasn't the first time it had happened to that engine. The car sat in my garage for almost a year after that, until a friend of the family bought it for $200 in April '99. I towed it (back) down to the L.A. area (there's another story entirely!), and the family friend put a new engine in it, eventually also replaced the tranny, and is still driving it today. All told, in spite of having the car either in my name or promised to me for over 10 years, I think I put less than 1000 miles on it... |

My first car was a 3 year old Austin America (in 1972) with a very unusual (for then ) 4 speed automatic transmission ( with 8 quart common engine/transmission sump) . I quickly gained experience and confidence and realized that the car was (1) too slow (2) likely to break if I goosed it and (3) NOT a babe magnet.
I dumped it 3 months later for a 68 MGB.

1966 Pontiac LeMans Convertible. Paid $25 and drove it home....from my next door neighbors house.
Put a new top, stereo and speakers into it, spent the entire summer doing body and paint work, then like an idiot I sold it for $500 so I could "move into the '70s". Bought a 1973 Chevy Impala Customer Coupe....went through 3 transmissions.....oh well. Can you believe that we let children so young decide things like...what we are going to do with our lives????? Our cars!!!!! Sheesh

My old Volvo
since i'm originally from nyc (now ensconced in southern california) i didn't learn to drive until i moved here. and then, only 5 years after taking public transportation here in L.A. (i wanted to be a part of the solution. yeah...i was an idiot!).
anyway, first car was only 10 years ago (at 26) in 1995. 1976 Volvo 240. Paid $1200 for it. Original paint was white and i re-painted it a midnight blue. Was so excited about driving that i had no idea how old and "on it's last legs" it actually was. in retrospect, the car was a piece of *****! in early 2000, it started having engine issues and things just started breaking down. on the US101 south, on a quiet sunday morning, the drive train actually disengaged and was dragged for some feet until i was able to get the car to the side of the road. rather than taking the hint, i had it replaced. eventually the coolant system gave out, fans broke, and the engine overheated while on a brief run to a video store. after a mechanic told me the engine blocked was actually cracked (!), sold her for parts. My first car was a 1993 Camry that I got for $3,500 in the spring of 2002. I just sold it this may and put 15k miles on it. I actually made a little money on that one. It was gutless as can be but very solid. I bought it with 125k on it and sold it at 140k. It was a champ in the snow and dirt cheap to run. I kind of miss the "cheapness"

Land Yatch
1973 Cadillac Coupe de'Ville. Yellow with a black top and black interior. 472 cubic inch engine(501). She was 18feet long. Had two of them in fact. Both yellow and both were creme puffs. I sure do miss'em. That was 16 years ago and I haven't gotten over them yet.

My first car was a '68 Volkswagon Fastback purchased in '74 for $650.00. Wish I had it now. There was a nice black one in Old Car Trader recently for $5000.00.
2nd car '67 Ford Fairlane straight six for $700.00 3rd car '71(I think) Citroen ID 19, around $800.00, wish I had it now 4th car '76 Fiat 128 Hatchback, very fun sporty car, wish I had it now, I think they've all gone to the rust graveyard. 5th car '79 Lincoln MkV, my first pimpmobile, sweet ride as they say. 2 very crap cars after that I won't mention, of course the odd Van and motorcycle in between the cars. Now just my 240d and an old clapped out Mazda pickup that won't pass smog insp. anymore so it will be headed to the wreakers soon.

Oilslick, when you said 1973 Coupe DeVille, this old song from the 70's started going in my head, I'm sure some of you have heard it, one of the verses, the guy is talking about a Cadillac with a "diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin' the scene with the gangsta lean..." Now, my first car was a hand me down, a 1981 300SD, I've handed it back up since I have a 1982 300D now, although, I sometimes get behind the wheel of the SD sometimes.

My first car was a 1970 Plymouth Duster...............was given to me by my father to tinker around with. He drove it as a work car for 6 year beforehand. Drove it for about a year till rust overtook the front frame rails and at that time it was beyond saving.
