My favorite non MB diesel, my truck. I love the bottomless power of the 24 valve ISB Cummins turbodiesel. 105k miles on it now, and bone stock, fleet spec plastic and rubber, hose-it-out interior. A real, true, cannot argue it WORK truck.

My ideal non-MB diesel is the 3500 Cummins Ram Single cab, single rear wheels, and a 5/6 speed tranny
With a retrofitted splitter I must agree Warden, the 6-71 sounds real good revved up, goin through the gears...I got to drive a 1980 GMC 5 Star General Fuel truck with one in it and a fuller 9 speed....too much fun

You can get the BJ series Land Cruisers in Canada.
I test drove a 97 Passat TDI a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. A lot more perky off the line than any MB Diesel I've driven. Had it had AT I'd be driving it now Mind you, it's far from the ideal car for me. Compared to the SDL, it's small (duh!) and tinny. Felt smaller and tinnier than a 93 Camry I spent some time with. Control placement on the dash would take a long time to get used to. I had an 84 Rabbit Diesel 10 years ago. 4-speed, no PS, no AC. That was the heaviest small car I've ever driven. I think a bad bushing in the clutch pedal assembly made it all the worse. But it hauled to 90mph and got 40+mpg which was what I needed at the time. Settled on the Rabbit because I couldn't afford even the rattiest 240D ATs back then. ATs somehow commanded a premium when I was interested. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

I had an 03 Ford powerstroke 6.0 crewcab and traded it in on an 04 3/4 ton maxed out Suburban with an 8.1 (9mpg) and if I had the time I would shoehorn that incredible powerstroke into the burb and you would have the finest UAV (urban assault vehicle) that money could buy. The Power of that 6.0 ,and the economy plus the interior of the GM. I think that Duramax engines are pigs in comparison to the Ford two stroke.

My 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins high output turbo diesel-505 foot pounds of torque, can tow a 20,000 pound trailer, and get 19 MPG in a 6000 pound off road monster(unfortunately not while towing the 20K lb trailer :p )

Favorite non/mercedes diesel?
I am a European born citizen and like most of you love diesel cars. Yes gas prices in Europe are crazy but its not the only reazon why they love diesel cars. People buy $100K mercedes diesels therefore its not only the fuel price.
They are overall but better cars. In regards to non/mercedes diesel you can buy just about every model that you can think of it in diesel form. Next to mercedes I would pick the BMW. I drove the 525 TDS and it was great. Its a very popular diesel in Europe. Then down the line would be de Audi diesel and at the end of the line the VWs. Of couse that are also a lot of low end cars like french, Japonese, Spanish and of course american cars. stay well |

My favorite non-MB diesel vehicle was my '82 Nissan KingCab pick-up. It had a 2.2L 62 hp diesel engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. It was slow off the line but the gearing was good enough to cruise all day at 75 mph and get 40+ mpg's. I had the speedometer pegged at 85 mph once and it still seemed to go faster. I sold it because diesel was getting hard to find at the filling stations where I lived in SoCal and I also needed a bigger truck.
I sold it to my dad 12 years ago and he's still drives it. I also still own the truck that replaced the Nissan.
