123 tranny into 126?
Hello! Sorry for the dumb question, but the "Search" function and I don't get along too well.
Will an auto transmission out of an '85 123 fit into an '83 126 (both with a 617 engine) without very much difficulty? Also, would a differential swap be too insanely difficult between the two? Thanks! |
try
Warden there is a member named sixto who is very helpful on transmission swaps. He helped me with a 1985 300d NON turbo with a blown transmission. They only made 2700 of these transmissions he told me which us version I could substitute and was right on about every problem I would run into and how to solve it. He is also in San Jose you might try to PM him.

A Tailhousing swap is not difficult, for some. I had a bear of a time trying to get a "cap" off mine but I failed. Randy had no trouble at all removing a housing from his. Good luck. |
Dave, The Warden and I go back a little bit starting with me almost making him put an M117 or M110 oil filter in his 300D.
TW, the EPC says that the 85 D and SD have different diff unit part numbers but the same diff case part number. That tells me that it should be a physical match. Question is, will 126 axles fit a 123 diff? The EPC isn't clear about how the axles fit into the diff. The 123 section shows axles that press into the diff, the 126 section shows a flange that goes into the diff and the inboard CV joint bolts to the flange. However, the 123 and 126 have the same diff side gear part number so the splines must be the same even if the rest of the axles are different. Confused? I am. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |
Thank you all for your replies :)
I think it's a moot point, though...fair bet the tranny-less 126 isn't what I'm looking for. Sixto, I actually still have that filter *lol* haven't found anyone who wants it yet...even though I offered to give it away a couple of times. *shrug* And that was actualy going to be my next question...if the axleshafts were the same or not; didn't want to lose the lifetime CarQuest warranty on my axleshafts :) I still have to figure out what I'm going to do... |

Warden I might be able to get a w116 transmission I have no real interest in the car except as a means to generate cash to fund my current projects. I can’t drive down there put a transmission in and drive both cars back. My current ride can’t tow it back. Heck it is a little sketchy just driving my SD that far. I know you’re in the same boat as it relates to funding of projects. There is probably a 5 percent chance that we could work something out with the car owner so we all benefited. I am probably just grasping at straws but it might be a way to get cash for a 240d engine. And for me to get the cash for bearings, rings ECT for my turbo engine. Well it is a thought it would be better if he was even 50 miles closer.
