Two MB daily drivers that double as hobbies. '83 240D in the snow and an '83 300SD for every other day. It is good to have two, however, so when one is down for maintenance the other is available. It is also good to have a wife with a truck ('97 Expedition).

My 300SD is the only car I drive currently until the 69 bug gets restored. Then I may dance back and forth but for the 1.5-2hour round trip commute to school and back every day, I sure do like modern conviences like power steering and whatnot.
However the bug has its place...and I still love driving it. If my 300SD was a stickshift, I would probably not miss the bug so much. But I am a stickshift guy...luckily the benz doesn't act like a normal auto. Speaking of daily commutes.. last friday 4 cars nearly hit me at various times and places (changing lanes into me, doing silly things) and I nearly rear ended one car! It was NOT a good day to be driving. The loud horn wins again! |
...boy these cars can really get up there in your A list of issues in Life, like your Doctor appointment or son's cross country race or IRS tax audit, there you are wondering if your door straps need replacing...I hear Secretary of State Colin Powell ( Man I truly respect and admire) is a car afficiando too, I wonder if when he's in a top level meeting whether he's secretly wondering whether his injectors need cleaning...of course with his brain power he can multitask and hold a thousand issues up there anyway....

The 1985 300SD
is my prime mover.
Two domestic gassers under repair for resale. Oh, my wife drives a 2002 Grand Prix, but I don't ride in it. |

.........but, do you repair it?? |

BOTH, and that has been a real struggle for me of late. Carrameow, I have read your posts with considerable interest, as I feel I've experienced exactly the same feelings that you've written about, I mean wow. My "spare" vehicle is now pressed into service while the SD sits in the garage awaiting another round of TLC by yours truly. The spare is a 80 Chevy K10 that is used for dump runs, camping trips and plowing. I have a good view of the road driving that thing, and I mean by glancing through the hole in the floor  The ugly truth of what went wrong this time will be discovered very soon and posted here soon after. SHMBO has said that this is better just be a hobby so often that I now almost believe it myself. Taken one way, it makes sense to just get something else, but I'm not there YET. I'm very stubborn, but at 43 with 4 kids, I sure am tempted to get a Honda civic and just be done with it. But it wouldn't feel the same. I feel better having a hobby I keep telling myself, and I really do believe that. So it's both for now :( :)

Mine is not my primary daily driver, that is my honda, and since gas prices got stupid high the Saturn. Mercedes is a fair weather and sumertime only car.

My '85 is the only car I own...for now

W123's have been my daily drivers for 12 years...
...they're in good shape, trust 'em to take my ANYWHERE and get me back.

96 Civic is the rain and snow car. The 240D was bought to keep miles off the Civic and when I don't feel like driving the motorcycle. The 300SD was bought as a vacation driver. So, they are hobby cars.

Toblin, a question about your insurance...
Quote:
My 83's coming up for insurance renewal. Please PM me if you don't want to put the company's name on the board. Many Thanks, |
only cars I've got. Replaced a 98 subaru and a '67, '78, and '87 volvo to go only diesel. Had an SDL up and running on vegetable oil, then sold that to aquire the wagons, which had been the object of desire for a long time... both are solid, so I'm happy!
A little fix here and there is not so crazy, but your posts seem to indicate that you can't stop at changing the oil; you change out the crankcase... maybe you need another hobby? ha ha... |
I am planning on a 300TD to be my only mode to transport... hope it starts this winter. Gonna call the guy tomorow to see if he will accept my offer, then go p/u a Parts car and GET BUSY!!! Having about a month to work all the bugs out before work and the real world crash back in the picture. Hope it works.
