For Sale: New prechamber removal tools

Hello all,

A friend of mine from the MBZ email list, the late Dr. Steven Foster, had worked on a project to duplicate the tools required to remove prechambers from MB diesel cylinder heads (OM61x, most OM60x). His machinist, Peter from Bend's Teul in CA, is the one who actually manufactured the tools. This project came about after Steve had borrowed my tools (made by Sir Tools, the ones you'd buy from Performance Products, Baum Tools, etc) and discovered they were very poorly manufactured - cheap offshore steel, poor heat treatment, sloppy machining, etc. The replicas made by Bend's Teul are 4340 heat-treated alloy steel, with zinc plating, and of course Made in USA. They are an order of magnitude higher quality than the cheap offshore junk, and the cost is about equal (or less!) than you'll pay elsewhere for the cheap stuff! There was only a small number produced, approximately a couple of dozen of each (ring tool, and hammer/extractor). When they're sold out, there will probably not be another production run, unless there is significant interest (translation- a couple dozen pre-orders!). So get 'em while they last. The fit, finish, and quality is second to none.

What They Work On:
There are two different tools. First is the lock ring removal tool, aka 'pin wrench'. This fits most all OM615/616/617 Mercedes diesel engines, and all OM601/602/603 with vertical injection - i.e., up to about 1989. (Later OM60x engines with inclined/angled injection use a splined ring that takes a different tool.) Second is the slide hammer and adapter. This is what's needed to extract the prechamber after the lock ring is removed. The slide hammer setup includes a threaded adapter that screws into the prechamber. This will work on even more engines, including OM611/612/613, OM615/616/617, OM601/602/603, and OM604/605/606.

Types Of Tools Available:
Steve and Peter designed a standard ring removal tool, similar to the Mercedes factory tool, and also a heavy-duty ring removal tool that allows extra leverage to break free frozen lock rings. There are only 4 of the HD tools available. Similarly, for the slide hammer there is a standard slide hammer with adapter, as well as a heavy-duty slide hammer with replaceable bronze bushings between the hammer and the center shaft. Finally, there are a few slide hammers bodies without the threaded adapter. They can be used with other industry standard tools (body dent pullers, etc) that require a slide hammer.

Pricing:
Ring Removal Tool (standard) - $85
Ring Removal Tool (heavy duty) - $100 (only 4 available)
Slide Hammer + Adapter (standard) - $65
Slide Hammer + Adapter (heavy duty) - $80
Slide Hammer Only (NO threaded prechamber adapter) - $25 (only 4 available)

Shipping will be approximately $15-$20 in the lower 48 states due to the weight of the tools. If you are outside the 48 states, please email for shipping quote and/or payment options. If you are interested in more than one item, inquire about a discount (for example, standard ring tool & slide hammer would be $140 + s&h).

How To Purchase:
Please don't email or PM me, I don't have the tools! Instead email Peter Czyl directly at Bend's Teul. His email address is: petercz@earthlink.net

Just got mine in the mail.

Let me tell you these are some nice looking tools. I'll be pulling my prechambers this morning and I'll report how they work.

gsxr 04-14-2005 09:39 AM

Cool! So Peter still has some left? I haven't talked with him in a while, I wasn't sure if he did. Glad you like them!

Well I just yanked my prechambers.

First off.. these tools are top rate. I've got a large 1/2" craftsman socket wrench. I think the ring removal tool feels more solid than the wrench.

I was a little sloppy taking the first ring off and didn't make sure the tool was snug and did a good job of ripping the ring up. However, I'm sure its still usable, just be carefull.

The slide hammer is a beast. It only took about 10-15 slams to get the prechambers free.

I'm a little concerned about the adpater that fits in the prechamber. It wouldn't thread all the way in, and as a result I pulled out the first thread on a couple of my prechambers. I'll see how the injectors seat before I re-install them.

did you purchase the standard or heavy duty ones?

JamesStein 04-14-2005 08:31 PM

I got the heavy duty set.

gsxr 04-15-2005 10:23 AM

That reminds me... when I pulled mine out (years ago, with the cheap/junk SirTools stuff), I also had a problem threading into some of the prechambers. It's not the tools, IMO... it's crud in the threads on the prechamber themselves. Definitely try to clean up the threads with a small wire brush, or something, before threading in the adapter. Then make sure you get 6+ turns before firing up the slide hammer. I thought maybe it was just my car but apparently not! Note that the injectors screw into the lock ring, not the prechamber, and seat against the prechamber's curved internal seat. So the damaged theads shouldn't affect anything after you re-install them, it would just possibly be an issue for future removal.

Do they? That would explain it then. Every one of my injectors was covered in a stick goo.

Next time I'll chase the threads. I didn't mess them up that badly. Just the first thread or two was torn out.

My prechambers are currently soaking in cleaner. I'll see how easily it threads after cleaning them.

I can say the metal the tool is made of is stronger than the metal the prechamber is made of. The tools threads are not damaged in the slightest.

I ordered my tools today. It looks like I may have a leaking seal on one of my pre-chambers. I saw some bubbles around one rings when I had a slight leak from one of the injector lines. Possibly a bad o-ring? I might go ahead and change all the o-rings while I'm at it. Doing that job myself will more than pay for the tool.
