Dead climate control.

What a great week for the heat to die! It is going to be cold all week!

I think my blower motor just died. Thursday I started to hear a bearing dieing noise coming from the dash when the blower was working. But it would only do it when it was turning slowly. If I over ride the auto mode and push the high button it would go away. Now today the CC isn't doing anything at all. I can hear the flaps moving around inside when I push the button's and I can feel the ac compressor kick on. But nothing blows out of the vents? If I swing the dial up to max heat or down to max cool I can feel a little air coming threw almost like an outside vent?

I don't think it is vacuum all of my locks are working fine and my trans is shifting normal. Is their a way to test the blower motor?

As I understand, Defrost is supposed to engage full blower, full heat, no exceptions. If that doesn't get the blower motor running, it may be suspect.

Perhaps a fuse, perhaps the speed control resistor, perhaps the blower motor brushes.

Fuse sounds easy, resistor and brushes require some disassembly for further research. I have done nothing to mine, so I have no experience.

Best of Luck
Jim

See if a swift kick towards the glove box in the passenger footwell gets the blower going. If so, it might just be worn brushes. There's a thread on replacing blower brushes for cheap. Pulling the blower is a 5-15 minute job. If the motor has axial play, replace it unless you're well trained in electric motor repair.

There might be a separate case outside the fuse box that has a couple of fuses for the blower motor. I haven't found that box in my SDL but there's a picture of the retrofit kit at FastLane. Given the length of lead in the picture, it can't be too far from the fuse box. All I see around my fuse box is leaves :/

I was thinking a fuse too, last night I was looking at the fuse box. Fuse 5 says climate control on it and looks fine. But their is a note on the fuse box that the blower fuse is outside of the box. I have not been able to find it.

But now the climate control works fine!? When I went to pick up my sister from work last night it was working well and this morning I started the car and played with it. I'm am thinking a fuse or relay. I will check out the pic on Fastlane maybe that will lead me in the right direction. Their isn't much over their it can't be that hard to find.

It is a fuse that looks like the one inside the GP relay if you've seen it. I think it's in a black rectangular box. It is just a wire really. I am speaking in regards to my dad's 300E which also has the fuse outside the box. I'll try and snap a pic now.
Thanks
David

Just so you know, on those cars, the vaccumm for the door locks is run by an independent vaccumm pump in the trunk. Engine controls/AC controls and door locks are separate beasts on these cars!

Thanks want. I think I know what box you are talking about.

ayalar007 so they are a seperate system? I know about the vac pump in the spare tire well, the W140's have it in their to. That makes sense though because the last time I had a vac leak in the climate control the trans would shift really hard. But the door locks always(knock on wood) work fine.

I've heard that they can have a small crack that makes intermittent contact. It's on the shock tower in fornt of the fuse box incase you can't find it.
Thanks

About two months ago I had the SDL in bumper to bumper traffic for about 15 minutes with the a/c on. The blower decides that it does not like bumper to bumper traffic and it shuts itself down. No blower, no matter what speed you select. I'm thinking, "great, another project". After getting out of the traffic, I reached my destination at low speeds and without a blower.

Start it up a few hours later and everything is back to normal. M/B gods at work again?

Once in awhile random things on mine will just stop working, but they quickly just come back to life. I guess sometimes it gets pissed at me and decides to throw a fit.

Update:

Well unknown to me my dad took out the blower motor and made it work yesterday! (thanks dad) He said it was just full of crap he sprayed it out with electrical contact cleaner and the air compressor. I guess a lot of dirt and sand came out. He said the bearings were very tight and it looked like a good motor, also that it came out in only a few minutes. So for now it works fine and I am going to leave it alone. But if it ever goes out again I will see if I can get it rebuilt. Or bend over and get a new one!

Also thanks again Want that box you posted is in the SDL. It is mounted on the fire wall right across from the master cylinder. The strip fuse that was inside was starting to crack and looked original. I put another in and cleaned up the connections. It is a 30 amp fuse.
