What trannys will go into an 83 SD?

Looking to get my dying SD rolling again, and am looking around at replacement trannys ( after pulling off the valve body assembly and finding large chunks of metal comng out of the upper casing ) so which ones will fit? These an SE in a p-n-p near me and some 123's, any advice would be great. Been reading up on swapping tail pieces also in the thread the Warden started...

P.S. anybody selling an auto tranny or wanting to trade for a manual tranny near Santa Barbara CA?

You should double check, but I believe you can use the transmission from an '82-'85 300D turbo. this would be the 722.118 (W 4A 040) transmission. They both use the 617.951 engine I believe. Not sure about any changes iyou would need to make. Does your SD have an electronic or mechanical speedo? That would be one thing to watch out for as the 123 has mechanical (not to mention a mechanical oil presure gauge to dump oil on your lap!)

The 81-85 300SD shares the same tranny with the 86-89 560SL, the 722.303 tranny. The tranny from the 300D will not work because the W123 300D uses a mechanical speedo cable, the speedometer on the W126 is electronic.
