Tips for removing P/S pump from 115?
Hello,
The little SOB is not playing nice! I've got hoses, belt and bolts removed from the pump, it is free but will not come out the top or the bottom. Removed vac line and oil cooler hose without success. Began removing the bolts for the pump bracket, got 3 of them then ran into difficulty accessing the ones on the front of the crankcase. It is looking like I will have to remove the fan and shroud to get at those bolts. Will removing fan and shroud followed by crankcase bolts of P/S pump bracket lead to victory? Show me the way masters. Thank you!

46-710 in the w115 cd manual. really simple. not
with a friend took off a broken bracket and replaced it once. terrible job. most difficult. the bracket has broken again. its his car now, was mine, but if i was going to fix it again i would support the subframe, undo the four subframe bolts and raise the front of the car up. i think both the bracket and pump would be accessable then. we didnt take the pump out, just changed the bracket. took off the fan, removed the battery and its pan. since the bracket has broken again i would switch the old style p/s pump and bracket to the newer style, put the battery at the passenger fire wall if there is no a/c or in the trunk. good luck don |

I've already got the sway bar and control arms off the car so access is better than normal as it is. Will yank the fan tomorrow. Hopefully I wont have to pull the radiator but if that's what it takes. . OTOH. . . maybe it is time for a vac pump rebuild. . . What part of norte de Kalifornie do you reside? I'm two clicks north of the Golden Gate. (not sure what a click is (Sonoma))

Fan and shroud
I am not sure about your 300 but on my 115 240d removing the fan and shroud is required to get to the alt or the ps pump. It saves a lot of time if you have swivel headed gear wench in the correct sizes and only takes a few minutes.
If I remember correctly you unbolt the shroud and slide it back (or maybe lift it up slightly)so you can get to the front of the fan, it is a little tight but doable for most normal sized hands. I don't recall what else saved time, it's been a year since I had to remove then but I had to do it three times in a month. (don't ask)

There are a couple different versions, I think this one has the Euro style PS pump for the 5 cyl.
Removing fan and shroud created the space to get it out without removing the bracket. Thank goodness because one of the bracket bolts is behind the harmonic balancer. As you said NC240D76, a gear wrench would work well there if I had one. Other time saver was removing oil cooler hose, also sway bar is off which helps tremendously. Thanks.

Hey, just imagine if you were having to remove an air pump from a W115 gasser, its located below the PS pump, all the belts have to come off, and boy what a PITA. BTDT.
I sold my '76 300D recently, I don't miss it either. I still have the '71 gasser - NO power steering (manual Armstrong method) steering. Don't you wish! :-} I love the lil bugger! Stick shift and no vacuum locks or electric windows to go bad either! 1971 220 (gas) 4-spd manual 104041 1979 300TD w/ ’85 turbo engine 294050 1983 300D 240700 1985 300TD 215225 1987 300D 258K

Oh, it wasn't that bad. Installation will be worse though. Glad I don't have to mess with no air pump!
