Pop test scam!!!

A little while back I took 5 injectors in to see how they would do with a pop test. I went to a small diesel shop in Denver called Diesel only, right near the DADC school. They had a couple of diesel mercs outside the shop so I thought hey mabe these guys know what they are doing. Their sign in front is a large spark plug with a cross through it. They did the test for free, and told me that a couple of the injectors were bad. They also told me to bring my whole car to their shop as soon as possible. I took them back home and installed them. I started the car (which ran before I took the injectors in) and it was missing horribly, only running on 3 cylinders. At this point I was not happy, I took the injectors all out and disassembled them for further inspection. Guess what they did? They took the guts out of two of the injectors!!!!! Yup a couple of them were bad all right! Anyone considering using these guys DON'T! The definition of SCUMBAGS! I should have known when I entered the shop and the owner started arguing with his wife. The guy took the injectors back and the entire time I was there they were arguing! They must be a "diesel shop" (running something else out of there) because I had the strong feeling they didn't want me as a customer anyway. I guess I will have to order up some of those Colorado Gold injectors to get a matched set. Anybody have experience with these? Good? Did I mention to never do business with DIESEL ONLY in Denver CO? Anybody from Denver know about these guys?

So the guy was having an argument with his wife and having a bad day, and very likely forgot to include part or parts of two of your injectors!

Yes, not good business practise, and he has inconvenienced you no doubt! But why didn't you go back and remind the guy, politely, that he forgot some parts? I bet he would have felt embarrassed and corrected his error.

I know it's not your fault guy, and you gotta gripe, but I would have gone back and asked him to fix his error, if he didn't, then I'd blast him publically here as you have here! BB

Should he even have taken them apart to "pop" test them? If not, I'd start making some phone calls. Like the State Attory Generals office.

right, go back politely and ask for your missing parts. Don't leave without them.

This is exactly why I work on my own cars........too many shops like that, makes it hard for the honest guys to get a fair shake as they bring distrust to everyone in the field.

Doesn't one of our fellow TD owners go to the diesel school near there? Maybe we should ask him to toss a well aimed brick on his way to class on Monday...

Or maybe it was an honest mistake.... But probably not.

I once took a small weld job to a shop that I got a really bad feeling from. Lots of arguing and yelling, gruff owner, filthy shop, etc. He took my order and the piece of steel I had brought for it. Never heard from him again, and all future contact resulted in him never having seen me before. He was probably drunk when he took my order. I never persued it because, A, I was afraid of the place, and B, I only lost a few feet of scrap steel, not really worth anything monetarily. But still, I was pissed off.

I hope you get this taken care of! It sure sounds like a scam to me. You might give them one last shred of doubt in case it was a mistake, but be prepared to fight your case...

peace,
sam

They should not have taken them apart. The injectors were just being TESTED.

Thanks for the warning -- it really sucks that people will try to make a buck by dishonest means.

There must be some inverse relationship with quality cars and bad mechanics. Some cars must be greatly loved because I know great guys for dealing with air cooled VW’s or those quirky British sports cars. To find a good mechanic for my 280 w108 I took it around to a few shops knowing that the dizzy was worn and timing moved around a little. Two tried to sell me $2,600 IP’s and know body caught the problem. Porsche – don’t even ask.
The reason I love the 240Dis that it takes me back to my youth where everything was simple enough that I did all my own work – had too – It’s never been into the shop. I know there are great people out there for the Merc’s, but I’d be a little leery about the ones with carpeting in the shop – I know of two in SoCal.

Yikes. Like what guts did they take out- the spring, shims, nozzle, or pintle? Wow that's just outrageous. That kind of thing can get somebody in a lot of trouble. I think you should blow the whistle.

My guess, intentional screwing.

I made a good living on Porsches from my client base for 16 years because I got the owners that had been screwed by other shops. And they told their friends, and they told their friends. I usually had twenty Porsches and a few odd Ferrari and Lamborginis waiting to be worked on. The high count was 67 Porsches at one time.

You DON't take an injector apart just to test it.

Let's hope they just did a dumbass thing and tested them, found something abnormal, opened them up to look, gutted them and got distracted. But..., it's pretty freakin hard to re-assy an injector without the guts, not something you'd "accidentally" do.

Anyway, as far as the Colo Golds, the chromate that I use is giving me fits. Will work on some this weekend and try to figure out WTH is wrong. If I can't, I'll only have the silver plating to offer, but will balance them to whatever you want.

Also, I've all but given up on getting new German or French nozzles. Could have done a batch buy, but not enough were interested. Most of the online sources only ship the India made nozzles now and I won't use those on my rebuilds.

I do have quite a few used/good German nozzles in stock, but they will dwindle with time.

Next time you need pop testing, we should have a shop up and running in Boulder (instead of doing it in my basement) and you can bring there.

Your absolutly right! Didn't think about why he took them apart in the first place unless he decided to re-shim without asking, or reporting his findings first.

With that thought, skip the polite, and give'm hell!

All a good injector shop is going to do is put them on the pop stand and test them. I thinks you got played. Good luck getting your parts back.

Diesels Only is just 2 blocks from DADC and I almost got a job at their new shop they opened! I didn't because it would have been an odd route to get there and back everyday.

They were pretty unorganized and on edge. It's good to see a shop that knows how good diesels can be over gassers, but I would not trust an old, rusty VW Rabbit with them.
