1986 190D 201 body sunroof - help !!

OK, I have posted about this twice in the past year, being Colorado I was fine with the non-response. However, I am sellign my wife's 190D (2.5 Diesel) to a fellow list member in St.Louis, MO where the sunroof is a necessity and I'd like to fix this before delivering it to him.

So,
any ideas on how to get to the sunroof (I do have the original MB manual) when it is stuck closed ? The knob in the trunk does not open it.

Is it possible to pop the headliner section off the sunroof and do something ?

I am normally not this anal, if it were EBAY I'd just sell it as is, however the person buying it is a person that is known to me and has bought parts from me before and I desire the best for him.

gracias,

Hari

Sunroof advise.

I'd like to hear any input on this topic, as the car is headed towards me. I'm not too concerned about Grimgaunt getting it fixed before I take posession, but I would like to figure out how to fix it, nonetheless. I'm sure it's fixable, but any practical input would be most appreciated.

I found a book

On mercedesshop.com I found a book on my 123.

Do a mercedes 190 sunroof repair search at google, dogpile, maybe that could help?

I already have the factory 'chassis and body manual' for the 201. It says nothing about this.

A little research

It looks like this problem is fairly common with the 190's. I did a search for "190 Sunroof" and there are plenty of threads, and one in particular with photos.

Hari, do you know if this particular sunroof is a "tilt and slide", or is it supposed to just slide back without tilt?

In either case, it looks like the key is removing the headliner section of the sunroof, which is held on with some kind of clips (shown somewhat in the photos). After getting the headliner out, it seems that the most common problems are broken or bent "gold clip", and or broken or bent tilt brackets, which are located on each side. I think there is a crossbar which engages both of the tilt brackets (if it's a tilt sunroof).

If you can figure out how to remove the headliner section without damaging it, I believe the rest is just nuts and bolts. I have personally always preferred nuts and bolts to any kind of upholstery, door panel, or headliner type of work. That being said, the MB's seem to be more forgiving of door panel and upholstery work than any US made autos I've worked on.
