81 300SD Remote Starting in Winter

I have a 1981 300SD that I am told I cannot install a remote starter in because of the very short starting duration. I've read up a little bit on which models accept remote starters and it sounds like the 1983 and newer 300SDs can have remote starters installed. Does anyone know if I put a starter from a 1983 300SD whether I can hook up a remote starter. The car is left out in the cold where I can't plug it in for more than a couple of hours at a time so I would really like to install a remote starter in it.

Up-to 3 years ago, I owned an '83 300S. I always wanted a remote starter but every specialist I spoke to told me it could not be done. finally I found a shop that assured me that they they can do it. Six Hrs. after starting the installation, they could not get it to work and gave-up. They charged me nothing, and chalked it up to experience. The problem was not so much in starting the car remotely, but rather, getting it to shut-down afterwards. The major obstacle seemed to have been the Vacuum Shut-Off Valve. They just could not get it to work.

About a month later I was parked besides an '81 300SD (Like yours) in a Mall parking lot, when all of a sudden the vacant car stared on its own. I could not believe it. When I asked the approaching owner, if he was happy with his remote starter, he said that he is extremely satisfied. He than proceeded to give me a demonstration. The car started and shut-off flawlessly.

However, when I asked him who installed it for him he had no clue. He apparently bought the car used, and the remote starter was already installed.

Go figure.

Phil

Incorperate a electric powered vac switch to kill the engine?
Should be possible...easy enough...
My only issue would be having to turn the engine over more than just a light 'hit' of the key sometimes to get the engine to stay running when its cold outside.
Sometimes you have to give em that little extra .5 seconds.
Easy enough..
I considered it...but then realized I really like it the way it is

The trick is not how long the starter is engaged but rigging it so there is one signal to glow and another signal to crank. It can't be too complicated for the right sparky to device a 10 second delay. Worst case, you get a second remote start unit or use the accessory feature of a remote keyless entry unit to start the glow cycle.

As Brandon says, use any normally closed vacuum switching valve from a wrecking yard to effect shut-off. The vacuum circuit is tight between the key switch and the shut-off valve.

I've never heard that there's any difference between the starter or starting circuit of an 81 and and 83. Certainly not in any way that would make it easier or more difficult to add a remote start feature.

The typical advice around here is to search the archives. Don't forget to search the internet as well -

Smile Remote starting 300SD

Thank you very much for your response. As it turns out, I have already purchased a remote keyless entry and it makes a lot of sense to have the accessory hooked up to the glowplugs. And if I get another remote start, I can actually start the car remotely. That's great. Thanks again. I sure do like this forum. I seem to find out more here than anywhere else.
