Major differences... starting with MUCH more costly PISTONs.....with what are called ' annular' cavities... which allow the oil squirters aimed at them from underneath to circulate oil and thus take away heat from the top of the pistons...

looking for some advice, My used engine should be here tomorrow. I am wanting to put some new gaskets in the engine to delay the oil leakage problems that seem to come with the diesel engines. Anyone recommend to change some and not others? What are the musts? I looking at changing the oil pan gasket and the front and rear main? any others?

Hold your horsies!!!!

How many miles are on that diesel you have there?
Let me tell you my story...see if you want to give me your old engine

On my birthday, this year, I was driving home from portland (dinner) with my friend Ashley. We were coming down highway 99w just out of sherwood headed to newberg and I heard a hiss...but thought nothing of it. (grabbed a twig?) From this point it is estimated 6 miles or so...perhaps even more...just to get to town..traveling at 65-70MPH.
Noticed oil pressure drop shortly after hiss...took it awhile to dump all my brand new Delo 400 out the hose. Figured it was nothing...new to the car...I'll look into it.
I drive ALL the way into town (atleast 15min)..speed through town is 35...about 2-3miles...took me the better part of 5-6min..traffic.
I roll up to a stop light and whisps of blue smoke roll off the front of my car..."what is that?"
I instantly start freaking about the gauge and drive a few blocks away to park (nearest place) and pop the hood.
Holy...crap...
Engine oil everywhere, smoke, nasty, hot, SHUT IT OFFFFF!

Anyway...
I towed it home, replaced my lines, and my engine has never been stronger.

I wouldn't suspect your engine would have faired so well had you not just put brand new oil in but don't give up the ghost too quickly...my 617 was not really taken care of so well by the PO's but all I know is, I have no knocks, little blowby, and had the same oil loss you did...with even more miles..

Hope this is of some use to you...wish I could have got to this thread sooner.
Best of luck!

My Thread

If you have turbo..

Dwferg, the gasket and seals in the turbo oil return tube... gasket at top, seals at mid and bottom as tube goes into oil pan.... the most common leakage spot on turbo engines... easy to reach when engine out... pain when in....and much easier if installed in the process of the oil pan being off and being reinstalled...

My Thread

Major knocking on 262,678 or so miles on engine, thanks for the information though, I am thinking I will do a slow rebuild of this motor from the bottom up, I have never torn down and rebuilt a motor so as long as my salvage one is running I shouldn't be under the gun to rush the rebuild.
Thank you
