I think my steering box may need rebuilding.

I think I may need a new box in my 230 as I can't seem to get all the play out of the steering after adjusting it. Steering only feels tighter now but still seems to have the same amount of play. I'm wondering if there is anything else I should check before condemning the box? I've checked car steering.com and a rebuilt one will run $325. I'm sure the steering box is the same as the ones in the diesels as I cross referenced different years and models and it came up with the same part number.
