Here's my payback! Diesel Primer Pump Replacement
I've gotten loads of free advice from this and other forums. Now it is my turn to share some guidance. This past May I replaced my original leaking fuel primer pump. It is a simple. painless operation that took about 30 minutes - 15 of which was spend taking the attached pictures.
Note: I will only be able to attach 5 photos per entry. Photos A & B - the location of the existing fuel primer pump (next to the injector pump). Photo C - the updated replacement part - I paid about $30.00 from a dealer simply because I was on travel and did not want to wait to find it cheaper. Photo D - use a hose clamp (I used vise grips) to close off the fuel line after the first stage filter (the clear one). Photo E - using a screwdriver, loosen and remove the fuel hose. Photo F - using either a 17mm or 19mm socket with an extension, remove the fuel line fitting. Photo G - setting the fuel line fitting aside (on top of air filter) Photo H - now you have room to access the old primer pump Photo I - remove old fuel primer pump with a 24mm open end wrench (note pinched off fuel line at bottom of photo. Photo J - the new and the old parts compared. The new part came with an adapter that was not required in my application. Photos K & L - clean up and ensure you have removed the old copper washer. Photo M - install new fuel primer pump with a 17mm or 19mm open end wrench. Photo O - replace the fuel line fitting, tighten, and enjoy the completed project! Next I'll work on posting my project of adding rear headrests. I did this in under an hour with used brackets and leather headrests I got from mercedesdismantlers.com out in L.A. for under $100 - shipped! If done properly it will be no different than if it was factory installed. Stand by . . .

Thanks for taking the time to document that. We all should be doing that when we have a parts replacement or repair. Which is pretty much all the time for some of us...

pwogaman you will love the primer pump as it works far better then the old style. I replaced mine in Feb shortly after buying the car and I had to cut of a wrench so as to get it out and new one in easy. It doesen't take too much pumping to even get the fuel filter filled, don't ask how I know.

air in system
Do yoiu guys think this may solve a problem with air in the system i have?
my 300d running on veggi has been leaving me stranded 5 or so miles into a trip,i have to get out and hand prime to take off again,but when i hand prime(older style primer) its loose and almost no suction,if this is the case can air be getting in thru there??? huge thanx |

I think I replied to a post about this to you a couple of days ago....not sure.
Either way I would replace it anyway. Cheap as sin and super easy to do....10 mins maybe. I know there is a post sticky for WVO but I wonder why you are getting dumped that far into your ride. I think if it was a leak there you would be having a hard time starting if at all. What symptoms are you having. Can you give us any more info?

Yep,
Those pumps are the way to go with WVO. So much priming needed on filter changes and when things go wrong (Rarely if you did your system right). My pump has saved me many a time and I think my stock pump likes to have a freind

I replaced mine a couple of months ago as well. I think it was a $17 part. I did not have to disconnect the fuel line though.
