hello friends,I'm looking for some advise about an 83 300D. when i turn it off, sometimes it just keeps on running until I pop the clutch and stall it. What does this mean, why is it happening, can it be stopped. is it serious........I appreciate the help. thanx, bennylo

Consider yourself lucky to have a manual tranny, the rest of us have to get out and use the under-hood panic shutdown lever. The problem is vacuum related and is caused by a leaky component in the vacuum system or a malfunctioning part in the vacuum operated engine shut-off system. Use the search function on the forum and read, read, read. Usually not too expensive to fix, but can affect tranny and door lock operation until its done.

Simplest test is to hook a Mity Vac up to the vacuum shut off valve on the back of the injection pump. If pulling a vacuum there, will shut the engine down snappily, then the problem is elsewhere in the vacuum system. If the shut off valve wont hold a vacuum and it shuts down slowly with the MIty Vac, replace the shut off valve before investigating the vacuum system further. Make sure you read the threads on replacing the shut off valve to make sure you take appropriate measures to shut the engine off in alternative ways if you mis=install the shut off valve.
If shut off valve is fine, you must begin troubleshooting the vacuum system. Easy way is to block the line going to the doors to exclude that as a source of leaks.

Or just do what whunter does and let your diesel run all winter long. ;)

Seriously though, get a mityvac and start reading. You've already gotten good advice, and there is a LOT of reading to be done here about vacuum problems. They are cheap to fix, but can take some time to diagnose.
