Exsessive Smoking Letter

How many of you Texans have received a letter from a state agency (or someone acting like a state agency) telling you that your car was reported for excessive smoking?

I got my first one two months ago....think I may have to keep it...so I can add it to any others and start wallpapering the garage!

I wish I could get my 240D to smoke when I'm being tailgated. Between EGR fix, 49 cetane B2 fuel, I can't get so much as a light puff.

In Texas, that stupid letter is a complete and total waste of taxpayer dollars.

SWMBO got one a few months back. The law states that you are in violation if your vehicle produces "visable exhaust for more than 10 continuous seconds." Funny thing is that I see dump trucks and 18-wheelers all the time leaving a gin-yoo-wine black trail and SWMBO's 300D barely ever smokes...probably just some jealous a**hole with a bone to pick.

I can't drive mine too much still, but wow, could they go after me! Once again, I can't tell you how much I miss being able to drive "The Flash". I saw 2 wagons in downtown Dallas today. I heard the Klackity-Klack from behind me just in time to turn around and see a great navy blue wagon go by. Sounded great and no smoke at all. Sigh.........

They should go after all the dump trucks that throw stones and crap all over the road and bust up windshields left and right.

Ah yes. Every once in a while, I see one of those "vehicle emissions inspection" vans. They are usually strategically located next to an uphill on-ramp with a camera aimed at the back end of your car (much too low for trucks). There is also a cable crossing the road which trips the camera.

I would be tempted to write them back and tell them to adjust the camera to take in the "D" label on your trunk. Probably a waste of time with a government agency though. (The government makes no money, in and of itself. It only has what it takes from the people it governs.)

I am not sure if they are enforcing "smoke" tickets yet. Usually, you don't find out till you try and renew your registration and they refuse until the penalty is paid.

I know diesels smoke more than gas engines even when running perfectly, but sometimes I've gotta wonder... How much would we smoke if we actually had to conform to some sort of emissions guidelines?

I mean, a diesel engine will operate under incredibly poor circumstances, but that doesn't mean its being clean, and might mean that it is being incredibly dirty. We often quote the good emissions ratings of diesels, but how many of us have actually had our 20 year old beaters tested? If gas engines didn't have emissions testing requirements, how many of THEM would smoke all the time too?

Just an open question... My 300TD barely smokes at all, it'll puff a little if I slam on the gas from a stop, and it makes a little 'haze' during a cold start, but thats it. I'd like to think thats because it runs like a top, instead of just managing to get it started each day.

peace,
sam

3/4 CCW turn of the ALDA should allow you to produce sufficent smoke to obscure your license plate.

Angry

sounds a lot better than the mandatory drive clean testing we have up here.every 2 years whether you need it or not.its very nice for our provincial goverment to put car owners at the mercy of shop owners with no scruples.tales of abuse abound with this system, unnecessary repairs and car owners virtually held hostage.

Well,
Here in the good ol' backwards state of Florida. Home of the infamous chad and the presidents bonehead brother, there are is no emissions testing. (Actually in some counties there is but no where I am).

Gasoline cars smoke more than diesels here.

We have to go through the unfortunate process of the annual emission test, not to mention the safety inspection. Emisions is not bad, but safety can be brutal. One missing bulb and you fail

It is rough here in South Carolina..... State inspections were disbanded in 1996... As long as you have a license plate you're legal.......

That subject has been hashed to death.
Our government has decided in it's wisdom; that diesels are bad and gassers are good.
Now, be a good citizen, sell your diesel, buy a gasser and shut up.
The government knows what is best for you.
