Unhappy My Car has the Flu

Recently my car has been acting up. The valves tap more frequently, the fader switch is has been annoying for a long time, and just today I've hit rock bottom. On my commute home, the car felt shaky, more so then normal. When I arrived at my friend's house, things went from bad to worse, smoke around the engine bay, the smell of fuel... things weren't looking good. I let it idle for a bit as we tried to figure out the problem, the engine started to make a nasty hissing/sucking sound. Turned the car off and upon closer inspection, fuel is leaking. Can't really point out where but it looks like the IP at inj # 6 . There's also a small puddle on the floor and the smoke seemed to be fuel on the engine and seeping down the side of the block.

Question is... (and a stupid one at this), can it be driven home or should I have it towed? Furthermore what can this normally contribute to other than the IP?

I drove about 300 miles on a car with a leaky set of hoses to and from tne shutoff valve. When I left it in the garage and started it now and then you see drop after drop of fuel coming from the valve. It even left a puddle on the floor.

Overflow lines shot, dripping fuel everywhere, but check also for a cracked injection line. For reasons best known to the moron that designed them, those lines are quite thin and tend to crack at the injector cap nut. No fix other than to replace, but it's not hard. You only need to replace the leaking line -- symptoms are fuel running down the injector from the cap nut and rough running (no injection on #6!). DO NOT LOOSEN THE NUT TO CHECK!!! the line will fail completely and fuel will SPRAY out instead of drip when you try to tighten it....

This will account for the rough running, smoke, and dripping fuel.

I'd not drive it, it's gonna blow fuel everywhere, but if you aren't going too far you will be fine. Long trips are a no-no -- fuel everywhere and eventually something will ignit it...

Thanks for the responses. Yes its an 87 300D.

It might be spraying already as there is fuel not only on the ip but on the block, where the intake manifold connects. I guess its smarter to not drive it.

Also it appears that the overflow lines aren't cracked and don't feel damp.

Check the capped return hose on the last injector to see if the plug fell out.

Got a chance to look at it in the day time with the car running and it seems to be squirting small amounts of fuel (in the circled area), I've already tried tightening it, but without much luck, it just seems to run a tad smoother now.

Whats the probability that its just a cracked fuel line or is it something much worst like IP issues?

I'd say that 95% the line's bad, since tightening the nut didn't really help.

I imagine Fastlane has 'em, but I don't seem them on the list...might want to get in touch with Phil...

Good luck

Thanks for the heads up on it most likely being the Inj line. Now... for 1,000,000 kudos points, does anyone have the part number? Huepfenicon111
