FWIW I paid more than even KBB retail for my MB. It's still "cheap" compared to any new car. I did insure it for the full amount, $3000 is better than $0 right?

If it were wrecked today, I'd try and get the most from the insurance company using the sales invoice and $$ I put into the car on tires etc. Don't know if it would help, but it's worth trying right? I asked my broker what they would pay if the car was wrecked and she could not answer the question. She did say that if you could prove you just put a lot of money in the car, it would affect the amount they paid out.

But hey, I didn't pay anything close to what that ebayer is asking. Is this a rare example or something? It's nice, but...

I saw this one the other day and couldn't believe it was over 10 grand and still not meeting the reserve. I looked over the photos and really dislike the blue. And for some reason, it appears repainted to me. I can't put my finger on it, but especially the lower section around the jack points.

KBB is full of S*(^. I have sold many a car for much more than what they said it was worth. I also believe if you show your insurance adjuster everything that you put into your car they will pay up.

check your policy

Check your policy, becase some insurance companies pay "replacement value," meaning what it will cost you to get another car like yours... retail value.

But some companies, such as State Farm I think, pay "actual cash value," meaning practically nothing, like what a wholesaler would pay for your car.

i agree with

inbanshi. check the ins policy. but even if it says will replace with like vehicle how many 73k 300's are there out there?

my agent told us that we should check the kbb to decide if we want to have collision coverage. if i bought a car at 10g and the kbb is 4g then somwewhere i am out the difference.

even with low miles does that alone make this car worth 10-18 grand?

If you have a special car that is worth more then KBB or some such due to it being low mileage or collectiable, you can ask for a special policy on the car. You will need to have it valued by a couple of dealers such as the dealer's selling these old MB's. You then ask your insurance company to cover the car under that special policy. The same is often done with other items such as works of art or special jewerly.
