Gray market 85
I looked at an 85 300D for a neighbor today that had a little body damage (read bumper and panel and RR door). Otherwise, it ran great, shifted great and was in overall good condition except for a couple fusebox issues. First thing I noticed was clear fogs. They car is the exact same color as my 85 300CD. He met me at work and let me drive him back home. He had to go to a funeral and so I didn't get to pop the hood until I got to his house. I noticed it had smooth power, but no noticeable turbo boost. I also noticed things like the cruise lever had German writing on them. Got to his house and popped the hood, no turbo. I asked him if he was sure it was an 85 and he showed me the registration. I looked at the window post and the VIN looked like it was added on, so I popped the door and found the import tag that claims the car has been equipped with all equipment to make it US legal. My question is were non-US 85 300Ds available NA instead of with a turbo?

My '82 euro 300D is NA. I am betting that the answer to your question is yes. I think I have read here that the only turbos were for the US market.
You really have to keep the engine spinning to make power without a turbo. |

Turbo models were for North America only...

For sedans anyway. I've been in a Euro 300TDt.

That's it then, non-turbo in non-us market.
BTW, it has the rear fog and it works as it should. He is thinking of buying this car and had me check a few things over for him.
