What Affects Soot Production?
Other than driving habits, what affects soot level in a given engine? Specifically, what, if anything, can go wrong/deteriorate in an engine to cause soot levels to rise signifcantly?
In my 602 with mixed driving at 7500 miles, my soot level was 0.8%....mileage was about 180,000 at the time. Needless to say, I was pretty pleased. So I'm wondering, could this get worse? Or is soot production likely to be the same for the next 200,000 miles? Thanks.

Found this as at least a partial answer:
Worn-out rings or injectors, ....poor fuel spray patterns and incorrect air-fuel ratios are major causes of soot formation. A faulty fuel nozzle may spray more fuel than desired, increasing the fuel-to-air ratio and causing incomplete combustion and soot accumulation, or the air filter may become clogged, decreasing air supply and increasing the fuel-air ratio. And I guess raises another question: if soot production were becoming significantly worse due to one of these factors, would there be noticeable symptoms other than the soot itself?

Worn Rings = more blowby, crankcase oil in combustion chamber, blue/white smoke from exhaust
Worn injectors = loss of power, lower mpg, rough idle
