Castrol Syntec for ~ $20

FYO: I was at Advance Auto Parts yesterday and I saw Castrol Syntec engine oil for about $20 for a six pack. That's about $3.50 a quart and even lower than Walmart.

I bought 6 quarts, but I may go back and buy more.
BTW where can Mobil 1 Truck and SUV engine oil be found? I have looked in many different stores and I can't find it.

what viscosity is the castrol syntec ?

P.E.Haiges 12-10-2004 03:02 PM

Kamil,

Below is in reference to Castrol Syntec synthetic engine oil on special at Advance Auto.

I bought 5w50 but all the weights were the same price. Since I was only interested in the 5w50, I didn't notice what other weights were there, but I think I saw a 10w30.

I had good luck with the 5w50 in my '79 300SD. In 30,000 miles, it decreased oil consumption from 3 quarts to about 1 quart in 10,000 miles and has remained about the same for another 30,000 miles.

I've seen it at Walmart - has a yellow cap. Supposedly is Delvac 1 in disguise. My local Wally World sells it for $4 something a quart, which is less than the $22 I pay for a gallon of Delvac 1 from a farm supply chain. I'm buying from Wally World next time :)

FYI Castrol Syntec found anywhere other then at a VW dealership with the VW emblem is not, I say is not a true synthetic oil. We had some members find this out about 2 years ago on the VW forum, and it has been tested by one of VW TDI froum member who works for an oil testing lab. The VW branded Castrol Syntec is a true class IV synthetic oil. It can be had through some other internet distibuters also, but not at any chain store.

The Castrol Syntetic oil sold at Wal-Mart and auto parts store's is only a regular motor oil that's not made from synthetic base stocks. Mobil oil sued Castrol over this and lost when the judge sided with Castrol that they could call it what ever they want to because it was a trade name. The stuff is no better then any good grade of non synthetic oil from the company that sell for 1/3 the price.

So buyer beware when buying the Castrol Syntec. Most of the long time VW diesel heads are using the Mobil 5W-40 Delvac or it's retail twin Mobil 1 Truck & SUV synthetic oil or AMSOIL. I use the Mobil 1 Truck & SUV in the MB and the VW TDI. No noisy lifters here at oldnavy's. :D

Is the Castrol Syntec even diesel rated?

deeph8 12-10-2004 04:39 PM

mobil 1 0w 40

I just bought some mobil 1 0w40 at the local checker's. It says it is specially formulated for european cars. Was pretty expensive ~$5/quart, but I figured it would be a good choice in the Minnesota winter.

mobil 1 diesel and rotella t

are both available at my checkers auto parts.

the shell is 7.95 a gallon.

mobil 1 is 11.99. i have 5 qt. written down but i think it is only a gallon.

blaines farm and fleet near me has mobil 1 5-40 at 14.99 for a gallon.

no idea of the viscosity of the rotella. did not write it dowm.

Well I don't know to be honest, but for less money you can buy a class III synthetic from Shell or Chevron for half the price of the Castrol and it's diesel rated for soot control unlike the Castrol. The only mobil 1 synthetic's that are diesel rated offered here in the US is Delvac 1 5W-40, 15W-50 Mobil 1, and the Mobil 1 Truck & SUV synthetic 5W-40 which is same as Delvac 1. Also the 15W-50 Mobile one doesn't have quite the soot holding ability of the Delvac or Truck & SUV oil, but it's real close and will do fine in our cars. I did switch to the 15W-50 for summer use in my 240D for one oil change cycle.

As far as the 0W-30 Mobil 1 euro spec, I'm not sure about it's rating. The only reason for the 0W was to increase fuel mileage in gas engine cars and is probably not well suited for our diesels. They were really checking out the 0W oils and their use in diesels at the VW forum a while back and even VW's new PD engines can't use the euro Mobil 1 0w-30 or any 0W oils the last I checked. Myself I would use the 5W-40 Mobil 1 Truck & SUV with it's flow rating of -57F, I don't think you will find anything much better. I think the 0W Mobil 1 was rated -60F or -65F, but if it won't carry the soot then you have problem.

About the best rated non synthetic oil you can buy is Shell Rottella & Mobil Delvac 1300, and both are used heavly by the trucking industry in engines not spected for synthetic only, such as the new MB, CAT, & DD engines.

Castrol Syntec 5w50 has a CF rating.

Diesel owners are usually frugal, but when it comes to lubricating oil, they piss their money away on synthetic oil. I buy whatever dino oil is on sale for less than $2.oo per quart. Maybe I'm damaging my engine. Maybe I won't make it to the next oil change. This might be the last one for the old girl. She's been good. She doesn't use oil, doesn't smoke, and fires right up on cold morns before the glow light goes out. Maybe 345,000 is all I can expect. Maybe I'll get lucky and get another 50k or so. I love this old 83 wagon.

Thats a better deal than the 5qt. jug of Mobil1 at WalMart for $19.82
Which is better oil?

If you wan't to run a lower cost dino syn (not truely synthetic) than the castrol then buy the rotella syn, it's only $12.98 a gallon at walmart.

If you want to run a true syn then i would go with Delvac1. It is one of the best rated true diesel synthetics. I have seen it localy at VIP autoparts labled as Mobil truck and suv oil for $4.99 a quart.
