Find a steep hill and park with nose uphill. Start engine, put heater on full blast, run engine until air is purged.

So where does the air go? Wouldn't you have to crack the expansion tank cap or something?

Sorry, I assumed it was a given that the radiator cap should be off.

And additional coolant should be added to replace the air that is bled out.

Clamp off the blow by tube (vent tube from rad to overflow), then pump the upper rad hose (NO!!! NOT LIKE THAT!!!! You just 'squeeze" it in and out.)

I just had an issue with air trapped in my SDL coolant system.
After a few days the air worked its way to the top of the radiator, but I would follow the advice above and raise the front of the car slightly to help things along. You can tell if there is air in the rad if you squeeze the top hose and get very little resistance.

I then filled the coolant tank up to the point where coolant flowed to the rad through the 'vent tube'. This will displace any trapped air in the rad. It took about 2 Quarts to fill before the coolant backed-up through the vent tube. Since then, no problems.

I had an interesting experience in refilling the SDL. With the back end sitting about 12 inches above normal (on a jack) and after filling the expansion tank to the very top and allowing the system to fill as much as it is capable of, I started it and put the heat on high. Let it idle and the temperature climbed up over 100C.

OK, so, how to get more coolant into it?

Took off the upper hose and poured coolant directly into the head, a bit at a time, until it was completely full. It took about another quart. Didn't seem like this would be the solution.

Started it again and the temp climbed up to its normal 88 or so.

Took it for a drive and it remained at 88-90.

Refilled the tank with another pint or so after it cooled off.

Apparently, the small amount of additional coolant that was added directly to the head was definitely necessary.

As I understand it, the front end should be higher.

Recently, I had to replace a thermostat. Afterwards, with the front end on ramps, I had no problems "burping" the system of air.

It appears that I have misread Dave's advice. His advice is to jack up the back end to drain the system.

However, clearly, this would not be advantageous to fill the system.

I've only had my car 2 years now and I just changed my anti-freeze for the second time and the only procedure that worked for me was loosening the water pump cross over tube banjo bolt until a little dribble came out. Ran engine for a few minutes this way and it bled the system.

The easiest way would be to remove a heater hose while filling until it runs out, the re-attach it and finish topping off the system.

I make my vehicles do the hula: grab a bumper and wiggle it. Then whistle a Don Ho song after remembering to turn the heater valve on.

Taking note of where you live, is this in anticipation of the heat that will be coming from the vents of the Benz?
