I looked at a gasser today. I'm sorry!

A personal friend has decided to sell his '91 420SEL with 149,000 miles. The car is very nice! He says that the car has given him great service but has never been the most economical car when it comes to fuel mileage.

The car has been sitting for quite some time. The car is using some oil...about a quart every 2,000 miles. I know NOTHING about MB gassers. Come to think of it I don't know much about MB diesels either but I like to think I do.

He is willing to take less than $1,000 for the car. What should I do?

buy it

Have it checked out and buy it if it's less than $1000. If nothing else you could part it out if it blows up.

That is a great car. The 1991 models are the last year of the w126 v8s. I like my w126 diesels but I also love the v8 gas models, owning a 560sel and an SL. However, I have not been lucky enough to buy a 1991 model. Whatever the condition, you'll be fool to pass that car up at below $1K.

djugurba 12-14-2004 11:54 PM

hmmm. how far out in SC is the car?
I can't believe you'd lose for that price...

pawoSD 12-15-2004 12:49 AM

Whoa....under 1k for a car like that!? .......there's someone selling a 450SEL right by us, I'm checking it out tomorrow, it has some cosmetic issues, but hey, who knows how low u could get the price :D It'd be fun to have one of those around for days when gas is lower in price/to have some fun :D

Sorry, the car's a POS. BTW, what's the guy's phone number? ;)

That car would be real sweet with a 617 dropped in... :D

The car seems to use lots of oil, and that is most propably caused by the fact that stem gasgets (is that a real word? I mean the gasgets for the valves) has been dried out. Not a big or expensive thing to replace, after that the oil consumption will get down dramatically.

Normal problem with MB gassers.

Check the camshafts, they tend to wear in some models, you can hear it from the sound, and it also unstables the idle.

Othervise very nice car.

Good ones cost around 10 000 € (13 000 $) in Finland, so your price sounds really cheap :P

Can you really go wrong on that car for $1,000? I don't think so. I purchased my 500SEL for exactly $1,000 with the following issues: transmission slipping in 4th gear (I already replaced it), non-functional climate control unit, non-functional headlamp wiper motor, sagging rear suspension and an interior that was a 6 out of 10 (some tear on front seats). I still felt it was a good deal for $1,000 considering it came with all the service records, had been well maintained and had just 154K miles.

GET IT!!

YOU DID WHAT?
Looked at a gasser?
What were you thinking?!? ;)

Ya, sounds like a steal, start lookin for a diesel engine to drop in there.......

If you do not want the car, let me know and I'll come up and get it.

Thanks.

You've confessed your sin so it's OK to buy it.

I think all us dieselheads should also have a gasser just to drive around when we feel like driving something different. I am looking for sub $5000 MB gasser myself. Everytime I drive one, then get in my 300D.. I say WOW, my car is still the best. But a gasser would be nice as a 2nd car. Go for it.

braverichard 12-15-2004 09:27 AM

Yep. The diesel is fine and the performance of my 300SD is adequate, but once in a while I take the 500SEL out and do accelerations in top gear that the 300SD could only dream of. Good feeling indeed. :)

Scott98 12-15-2004 09:37 AM

I don't think you can go wrong for $1,000. Just drive it until it blows up. Even if it lasts a year you did o.k. for a grand. However, with 149k you would think it would have a lot of miles left in it.

Hey, I am in South Carolina too! If you pass on it, please let me know!

Wonder if my girlfriend would like a nice Mercedes for Xmas....?

That or jewelry...hmmm...

I better make the right choice!

Yeah... well, ya know... it's kinda strange but that feeling kinda hits me when the weather goes below 20 degrees... ;)
