300SD/s350 - what do you think?
I am probably opening up a can of worms but would like some advice - I am seriously thinking about purchasing a 140 body diesel. I know about the 140 weaknesses and know what to look for in the body/chassis/maintenance records. I also know about the notorious 3.5 turbo diesel engine in these and the 126 cars. My questions are as follows:
1. If these engines have been "fixed" what exactly do they do to make the cylinder walls thicker and does this reduce oil consumption/wear? Is it a sleeve? 2. What exactly should I look for in the engine/maintenance records so that I don't buy a big POS? 3. Those that own this model car/engine - how do you like it? Thanks in advance..... |

This topic has beaten the proverbial dead horse to ground chuck, or possibly even pate. Try using the search function. Short answer, the 140's have issues with evaporator cores and bending connecting rods. If the rods are going to bend this usually happens before 100K-150K. If the engine is original and past this point likely you are okay. The solution was stronger connecting rods in the new/rebuilt engine. If you can find a 140 that has had the evaporator and engine replaced its a nice car. If not, buyer beware. RT

I did use the search function - did not find answers to some of my questions
Yes. It has been discussed to death. My question that was not answered was (and, forgive me for being stupid) what did they do to resolve the weak cylinder wall issues and what did they do to rectify the other problems these engines have?
