O Rings on oil filter stem...question
 

Hi,

I have a 1988 W124 300D non turbo fitted with the OM603 engine.

In the morning when starting from cold, it will take roughly 10seconds for my oil pressure guage to show any pressure....when it does it goes straight to 3 and is fine thereafter.

I have read that the O rings on the stem/pipe that goes through the middle of the oil filter can wear, which in turn allows the oil to drain from the filter.

I also understand that you can replace these O Rings, however, when I went into my local Benz dealer, they said the only thing I could do is replace the whole stem/pipe as they do not list the O Rings individually.

Is this right?......or does anybody know the size of O Ring that I need to get....any other ideas or thoughts?

Don't expect them to stock them, most techs don't change them cause they don't come with the filter. The dealer I work at only stocks them cause I buy them every 6000mi :D

also, if you look carefully there are 2 pin holes in the stem itself that can get blocked with crud. 1 is near the top and the other near the 2nd o-ring

Nonsense. The o-rings are 6 x 10 x 2 mm. You are lucky that your fan belts were not worn out. They probably would have to replace your entire engine for a serious problem like that!!!

There were new orings with my Wix filter from NAPA. Filter is made in Poland.
Cleaning out the little holes in the stem is a good idea. I did it with compressed air last oil change and my pressure rises more quickly now. Of course, I also put in the new orings.

The "O" Rings are definitely available separately. My local Dealer gave me half a dozen for free :eek: and suggested I replace them every 3-4 oil changes. Top & bottom are the same by the way.

I mesured the grooves where the O-rings go on and found that the stem grooves are not same size. The proper O-ring for the larger groove it is 11x7x2mm and for the smaller groove it is 10x6x2mm. I bought the O-rings in a hardware store.

when i replaced the o-rings (from the originals :eek: ) i noticed that the top one was a little larger. however 2 same size new o-rings fit ok in both places...
i noticed a marked improvement of startup oil pressure and by cleaning the pin holes in the shaft the hot idle oil pressure reading is much higher than it was.

These "O" rings can look like they are good but they can get as hard as rock and be very brittle. The heat from the oil does a number on them.

Now that you have mentioned it.... I was trying to take the gaskets off the other day and they broke off as if they were made out of plastic. Once I cracked the first one off I said to myself "Oh ****, I have the wrong o-rings since these are plastic" Then I realized that they were probably fried. :D
