Motor oil for 1984 300 SD

Mobil delvac1 5W-40. Is this the best oil for Mercedes-Benz? Is 5W-40 OK?

5W-40 is fine, however, I'm not sure that you need this weight down in Texas. How cold do you expect it to be?

With regard to what is the "best" oil, my recommendation is to search all the oil threads here on the forum. There are more than enough opinions on oil to fill a book.

Motor oil 1984 300 SD

Thanks Brian for the reply. Weather in Texas (Lufkin) 25 to 100 degree. Seller had only 5W-40. Would like to have 15W-40---Will 5W-40 be OK until next oil change?

Just go into the search since we have covered this probably 1 trillion times. I know cause I am always getting yelled at for bringing up another oil thread.

Yaay, another oil debate thread. I'm currently running 5w-40 synthetic up here in the cold bitter Michigan winter.

I agree. 15W-40 should be fine to use year round in Texas. However, no harm will be done by using 5W-40. I certainly wouldn't change it until the next scheduled change.

Goos Sintetic Oil -0W40 - 5W40 - just perfect - you dont need 15W40
fast flow - good lubrication and cooling internal parts.

I ran Shell Rotella 15-40 here straight through winter in both our cars, and they survived. Hasn't been much of a problem....even when it was really cold, didn't start only one time but that was because the battery died after about 7 seconds of cranking.

Well, I'm in Houston, and my 300D uses Mobil 1 15w-30, with the red cap on it. No problems whatsoever.

Delvac 1 5w-40 is probably the best diesel oil on the market. Their is no reason to run a thicker synthetic in hotter temps, 5w-40 should be just fine in 100+ degree weather.

Btw a lot of the new cars on the market are changing to 5w-20 and 0w-20.

I used Delo 400 with the 300CD, and it seemed to work fine. I personally would never use Synthetic oil in a OM617...
